Lost, Suspected, Incomplete, Unscanned, and Untranslated Shigeru Miyamoto Interviews
This page of the Shigeru Miyamoto Archive collects interviews that are lost but known to exist, suspected to exist, incompletely preserved, unscanned, and/or untranslated to English.
Since this archive launched in 2023 I have kept a document detailing interviews that I know or suspect exist but which I have not been able to find. Rather than keep that information to myself I made this page documenting my findings. That didn’t quite include everything that was missing, though, there were still dozens of interviews that were incompletely preserved or untranslated, so I went through every entry in the archive and meticulously documented what is missing for each entry to be complete. My goal with the Shigeru Miyamoto Archive is to preserve and make accessible the words of Mr. Miyamoto and a corner of video game history, and documenting this is an important part of that process.
Want To Help?
I’ve tried to find everything on this page, but I’m just one person, I only speak English, I have other projects to work on, and it’s impossible to keep up to date with everything that’s uploaded around the internet. If you have access to anything below or information that could lead to it, please contact me at thespritecell@gmail.com, or on BlueSky.
Perhaps you interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto at some point and still have the magazine or the video file. You may have downloaded a video interview embedded in a webpage and still have it somewhere. Did you see Mr. Miyamoto give a speech somewhere? Maybe you have a Japanese strategy guide or a book about game design. Perhaps you speak Japanese or another language and can search old websites and magazines in that language better than I can. Or maybe you just like poking around the Wayback Machine and random gaming magazines and finding things.
Even if you don’t have access to anything you may know someone or be able to contact someone who does. I don’t wish anyone to be harassed about releasing scans, videos, or other media they posses, so if you if do try contacting anyone you must be respectful, non-demanding, and polite.
When I say “scans” of magazines, books, and newspapers I am not discounting a nice photograph that captures the full text, those are certainly welcome. There are certain books and other periodicals that are still being actively sold which I will not include in the archive because they could result in a takedown request. In those cases I would still like to personally see the full original interview or writing in some way for the purposes of writing a summary that I can include.
If you can translate from Japanese, French, German, Finnish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Chinese, or any other language in which interviews are discovered in the future, I would love to include them. Unfortunately, I cannot offer you money, and I encourage you to offer your services to someone who can.
There are a few non-gaming magazine and newspaper publications that have interviewed Mr. Miyamoto and which seem unlikely to have included said interviews in their physical publications, making them web-only. I have not included these below, but if you happen to see that they were printed, please let me know. Some of these include interviews with Time, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune.
Known And Suspected Interviews Or Writings Which Are Totally Or Partially Unpreserved
Magazines
Newsweek: The Nintendo Kid
Date: March 6, 1989
Let me take you through my journey with this. Chris Kohler’s book Power-Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life says the following:
Mario, or Jump-Man, as Miyamoto originally called him, was “neither handsome nor heroic… someone anyone could relate to.” Miyamoto described Mario as “a short, indomitable, mustached man in a red cap… a kind of Everyman who rises to heroism in the face of adversity” and whose “insignificance… makes him so appealing.”
The citation for this quote is Marsha Kinder’s Playing With Power In Movies, Television, and Video Games. Marsha Kinder has the following to say:
Even the Super Mario Brothers were based on a little character from Nintendo’s arcade game “Donkey Kong,” whom its designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, describes as “a short, indomitable, mustached man in a red cap, . . . a kind of Everyman who rises to heroism in the face of adversity” and whose “insignificance . . . makes him so appealing.”
There is a citation for this quote as well, “Nintendo Kid,” 66. This stymied me for years. I could find no book, or anything at all called “Nintendo Kid”. It’s a difficult phrase to search for. It wasn’t until I happened to see something else among the list of citations in Playing With Power that things became clear: “The Nintendo Kid,” Newsweek , March 6, 1989, 67. The author abbreviated this source the second time it appeared in the list of citations. This was what I had been looking for. I can see the Gaming Historian cited this article for a video, but I can’t find the article itself anywhere online.
In my search I came across this article by Sun Sentinel, which came out two months after the Newsweek article, that seems to quote it without attribution: “The Mario Brothers are the creation of a 35-year-old engineer named Shigeru Miyamoto, who in 1981 was designing characters for the Donkey Kong arcade game. Among them was a short, indomitable, mustached man in a red cap, envisioned as a kind of Everyman who rises to heroism in the face of adversity.”.
Game-On! October 1995

We have the translation of this six sentence statement about the creation of Super Mario RPG that appeared in Game-On!, but no scans of it.
Super Power Interview About The Next The Legend of Zelda Game
Approximate Date: Late 1997, early 1998
Super Power was a Finnish gaming magazine who interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto in its January, 2000 issue. If a machine translation is accurate, the interviewer states that two years ago Mr. Miyamoto said that it would be five years until the next The Legend of Zelda game. I know of no interview where he says this.
Mr. Miyamoto’s answer uses the phrasing “when we discussed”, suggesting that the interview being talked about was with the same interviewer and publication. Regardless of where the interview was published it would have taken place in late 1997 or early 1998.
Nintendo Fun Vision Issue 28
Date: June/July, 1996
Link: https://www.retromags.com/gallery/image/38682-nintendo-fun-vision-issue-28-junejuly-1996/
The cover of this issue of Nintendo Fun Vision says it has an “exclusive interview with Nintendo Japan, Enix, and Iguana”. This is speculative, but there are few other people at Nintendo granting interviews with foreign press other than Shigeru Miyamoto at this time. I could not find evidence of any game expo that these three companies all attended in the Spring of 1996, so they may be unrelated. I would like to confirm who from Nintendo is being interviewed, and it would be nice to have scans even if it’s not Mr. Miyamoto.
Dengeki Nintendo 64, As Reported On By IGN
Approximate Date: June, 1997
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/1997/07/30/miyamoto-reveals-secrets-fire-emblem-mario-paint-64
IGN translated seemingly every word of this interview from Dengeki Nintendo 64, but having scans to accompany the entry would be nice to have.
Famimaga 64, As Reported On By IGN

https://www.ign.com/articles/1997/12/04/the-z-files
Famimaga 64 asked Mr. Miyamoto 100 questions about The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and IGN reported on it. I would like to include scans of the original.
Famitsu, As Reported On By IGN
Approximate Date: December, 1997

Another Japanese magazine interview reported on by IGN that we don’t have the scans for.
Famitsu, As Reported On By IGN, GameSpot, m0m0_0ssrr_, and gosokkyu
Approximate Date: April, 1998

https://x.com/gosokkyu/status/1847465155858477459
What I originally thought were three different interviews with Famitsu all seem to be the same, with each source reporting on mostly different things. We have a picture of a small part of the interview and there is likely more that was not reported on by any of the sources. The translation on the GameSpot article is poor. I would also like to include scans of this interview.
The 64Dream June 1998, Via Miyamoto Shrine
Date: June, 1998
Miyamoto Shrine seems to have only compiled interviews they found online, but I don’t know where they got this 64Dream interview. It must have been posted somewhere else originally, but I’ve never seen it. I would like to include scans of this interview as it appeared in the magazine and to know who translated it.
Entertainment Weekly
Approximate Date: October, 1998
I don’t remember why I think this may have been in an October issue specifically. It says Mr. Miyamoto was at the Iridium in New York City, a music club. The online version is dated December, 1998. This seems pretty short for an interview, so there may be more in the magazine.
Dengeki Nintendo 64: The Legend of Zelda timeline

https://www.zeldadungeon.net/forum/threads/the-truth-behind-the-miyamoto-timeline.11384
The Zelda timeline has been a hotly debated topic for decades. The January, 1999 issue of Dengeki Nintendo 64 features Mr. Miyamoto giving an order for the games that has caused some consternation. Despite its notoriety, a scan of this interview has never surfaced.
Famitsu, As Reported On By IGN
Date: August 23, 1999
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/1999/08/24/miyamoto-speaks-on-zelda-gbc
Mr. Miyamoto talks about the origins of Zelda’s Oracle games in this interview with Famitsu. There may be a bit more information that is not included here. I would like to include a scan.
The 64Dream, As Reported On By IGN
Approximate Date: September, 1999
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/1999/09/23/more-zelda-details-surface
This may have been the fourth of five interviews with The 64Dream in 1999. This one seems to be unique from the others, but I’m not positive. A scan of this interview would be appreciated.
The 64Dream, As Reported On By DidYouKnowGaming
Date: November, 1999
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVRMb6aFdqY&t=386s
DidYouKnowGaming had a November 1999 The 64Dream interview translated and discussed some of it in a video. Ideally, I would like a scan of the interview and a full translation.
Famitsu, Via Miyamoto Shrine
Date: October 27, 2001
Another Miyamoto Shrine find of a translated transcript of a Japanese magazine. Having scans would be nice, and I’d like to credit the translator.
Famitsu (Yuji Naka interview)
Date: December 28, 2001

This shmuplations translation doesn’t include any images from the Famitsu article, but I would like to include full scans as it appeared in the magazine.

Date: January, 2002

Another Japanese magazine with an unknown translator and no scans available.
Club Nintendo (Sweden)
Approximate Date: March 1, 2002
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/2002/03/01/more-euro-miyamoto-rumblings
IGN is reporting on a Shigeru Miyamoto interview with Sweden’s club Nintendo. The website apparently required subscribers of the magazine to log in to access this interview online. It’s possible this also ran in the magazine, and that would be preferable, because the member’s-only area of the website is very unlikely to be preserved. I am looking for the original Swedish version of the interview, whether it’s a webpage or a magazine scan.
Superplay Magazine
Date: April, 2003
Link: https://www.zeldalegends.net/index.php?n=interviews&id=2003-04-23-superplay-miya&m=html
We have a full English translation of this interview with Sweden’s Superplay Magazine (not to be confused with Super Play), but don’t have scans of the original.
Famitsu, As Reported On By IGN
Approximate Date: November 29, 2004
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/2004/11/29/nintendo-supports-cube
There is likely more to this interview with Famitsu, and I would like to include scans of it.
Nintendo Dream, As Reported On By IGN
Approximate Date: July, 2006
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/2006/08/21/miyamoto-opens-the-vault
This intriguing interview from Nintendo Dream for their 10th anniversary discusses quite a few games that went missing and were cancelled. There’s not likely to be much more to it than what IGN has reported on, but scans would be a welcome addition to the archive.
Level
Approximate Date: July, 2006
Link: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/new-miyamoto-interview.109003/#post-3775916
Level was a fairly obscure Swedish magazine that seems to be poorly documented. SantaC translated part of an interview Mr. Miyamoto did the with the publication, but not all of it. Archives of their website don’t seem to include the interview. I would love to include scans of this.
Entertainment Weekly: The man who made ”Mario” super
Approximate Date: May, 2007
Link: https://ew.com/article/2007/05/08/man-who-made-mario-super/
This may have appeared in the magazine, if it didn’t I would like to know, and if it did I would like to include scans of it.
Famitsu, As Reported On By GamesRadar+
Approximate Date: August, 2007
Link: https://www.gamesradar.com/fun-less-challenging-games-are-the-future-says-miyamoto/
Next-gen.biz reported on a Famitsu interview with Mr. Miyamoto and it wasn’t preserved. GamesRadar+ reported on that next-gen.biz report and that has survived. I would like to preserve the scans from the magazine issue this appeared in.
Famitsu’s 1,000th issue
Date: February 15, 2008
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZtFVT0cMsY
Famitsu interviews with Mr. Miyamoto tend to be reported on by Western media, but for some reason I don’t see anything about this interview for the 1,000th issue of Famitsu. You can see a bit of it in the video linked above, but I hope to include full scans and a translation in the archive at some point in the future.
Nikkei Business Interviews With Osamu Inoue
Approximate Date: Late 2008
However, Nikkei Business, my employer, was given the chance to interview, at length, Nintendo miracle-workers like Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto […] The result of these interviews was a special series of articles than ran in Nikkei Business.
According to his book, Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars, Osamu Inoue interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto at least once for Nikkei Business. This book contains quotes from these interviews throughout and likely don’t include everything Mr. Miyamoto said. Late 2008 is my best guess as to when these occurred, as the prologue states that all information is current as of April 2009, and the quotes mostly deal with the Wii. Nikkei Business is a weekly business magazine and it would likely be difficult to acquire a wide swath of them from this time period to find them, but I still hope to one day include the scans of these interviews. It’s also possible these were available online and are archived somewhere in the Wayback Machine.
GamePro Germany
Approximate Date: November, 2008
ITworld for some reason ran an interview with Mr. Miyamoto from GamePro Germany, except it seems to be incomplete, as it ends with a question. I can’t find any evidence of the interview on GamePro Germany’s website. It may have appeared in the magazine, which doesn’t seem to have any scans available. I would like to preserve the complete interview, whether it’s in the magazine or a website.
Famitsu, As Reported On By 1up

1up reports on a Famitsu interview that hasn’t been preserved. It may or may not be incomplete, but I would like to include the original’s scans.

The selected quotes are described as “highlights” so there is likely more, and I would like to include scans of this interview.
Edge 209
Date: December, 2009
Link: https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Interview:Edge_December_14th_2009
The full text of the interview seems to have preserved on Zelda Dungeon, but we lack scans of issue 209 of Edge.
Nintendo Dream: How Super Mario characters got their names
Date: February, 2010
Link: https://www.ndw.jp/mario-220913-2/
We are missing both a translation and the scans of the original article. The wording implies this 2022 article contains every word of the original. This is a particularly interesting article about how Mario characters got their names.
Official Nintendo Magazine: Genius at Play
Date: July, 2010
Link: https://magazinesfromthepast.fandom.com/wiki/Official_Nintendo_Magazine_Issue_70
There is an interview with Mr. Miyamoto in the July, 2010 issue of Official Nintendo Magazine titled Genius at Play. This issue does not seem to have been scanned or reported on by other outlets. Please note that is not Nintendo Official Magazine.
Famitsu, As Reported On By 1up
Approximate Date: October, 2010
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20110721223252/http://www.1up.com/news/super-mario-bros-25th-miyamoto
The article has “highlights” so there is likely a bit more to this interview. I would like to include scans of this interview.
Edge, As Reported On By Computer And Video Games
Approximate Date: April, 2011
Computer and Video Games is reporting on a quote from Mr. Miyamoto in Edge here.
There are many cases like this where a site that has the same owners as Edge reports on something “from Edge” but they don’t link anywhere or mention which issue it is from, and then I go looking through five scanned issues that I think could reasonably have it and find nothing. It’s possible that it never appeared in the magazine, or it was a tiny part of a news section I kept missing. This may be a small statement provided to Edge rather than part of a formal interview.
Entertainment Weekly: Wii U: Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto on the new system, and a Mario movie?
Approximate Date: June, 2011

This may have appeared in the magazine, if it didn’t I would like to know, and if it did I would like to include scans of it.

https://web.archive.org/web/20111114160018/http://andriasang.com/comyxv/
Part of this Weekly Play News interview was translated by AndriaSang. Weekly Play News seems to be a part of Weekly Playboy, a magazine. If this interview appeared in the magazine, I would like to include scans of it. They took pictures of Mr. Miyamoto and an earlier interview for Weekly Playboy did appear in print, so it seems fairly likely. A full translation would be nice as well.

GamesMaster: Late 2012 interview
Approximate Date: December, 2012, January 2013?
The reporting done by Computer and Video Games is almost certainly not the full interview, as less than a month later Official Nintendo Magazine also reports on a GamesMaster interview and has different quotes. There’s a chance the interview was split into two issues. The issue numbers are likely 256, 257, and/or 258.
Famitsu, As Reported On By Kotaku

Publication Date: December, 2025
https://www.instagram.com/p/DWHEmXtDQ5R/?img_index=1
https://www.instagram.com/p/DWPljiIDxIB/
Casa Brutus is a men’s magazine in Japan and they released a special issue about Mario, and some time later an English version was released. A number of pages contain quotes from an interview with Mr. Miyamoto. I probably won’t try to host scans of this, but I would like to be able to find every quote and summarize them for the archive.
Events
Super Famicom Demonstration
Date: November 21, 1988
Link: https://www.chrismcovell.com/secret/SFC_1988Q4.html
Shigeru Miyamoto was part of the reveal event for the Super Famicom. Japanese press were briefed on the new console and the magazine Famicom Tsushin published an article about it. There don’t seem to be any direct quotes from Mr. Miyamoto in this article, but there was definitely more coverage from other publications which may have transcribed the presentation.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask E3 Presentation
Date: May 11-13, 2000
Link: https://x.com/HyruleJournals/status/1711848779497062476
A number of people, including Shigeru Miyamoto, appeared on a stage at E3 2000 in masks to promote The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. It is possible that Mr. Miyamoto said a few words, but almost nothing is known about what this event was. We know this was covered by the press in some way since there are pictures and a small bit of video. There may be a full video or more detailed reporting out there.
Game Boy Advance SP Panel
Date: February 5, 2003
According to an issue of Nintendo Dream Mr. Miyamoto hosted a panel of game developers at Hotel InterContinental Tokyo Bay to talk about the Game Boy Advance SP. Satoru Iwata gave a speech and Keiji Honda of Enix, Yoichi Haraguchi of Namco, Taizo Matsuno and Shinji Hashimoto of Square, Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokémon Company, and Keiji Inafune of Capcom spoke. It is very likely that Japanese publications covered this event in more depth. I don’t remember where I got this scan from.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/05/22/cubism-vol-34-learning-to-love-nintendo-again
Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, and Denis Dyack held a roundtable Q & A for the press “after hours” at E3 2003 to talk about Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. The reporting linked above is all I’ve been able to find about it, which is pretty surprising for an event with such high profile people. A video recording, transcript, or more detailed reporting with direct quotes would all be nice to have.
The press release by Hideo Kojima and Shigeru Miyamoto is well documented and is not the event in question.
Smithsonian Seminar
Date: May 16, 2004
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20040624101545/http://www.1up.com/article2/0,2053,1597117,00.asp
The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History had a seminar titled Games People Play on May 16, 2004. Several people involved in video games, including Shigeru Miyamoto, spoke. We only have a few direct quotes and it is probably unrealistic to hope for a video of the whole event. So far this is the only report that has been found talking about it, but if others are found they may have different quotes.
DS Press Conference
Date: October 7, 2004

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-holding-ds-press-conference/1100-6107837/
There was a press conference held in Japan on October 7, 2004 about the DS. Shigeru Miyamoto, Satoru Iwata, and Akitoshi Kawazu spoke there, and possibly others. I can only find some small quotes from English speaking outlets. This was probably covered more comprehensively in the Japanese media, possibly even a video recording.
Nintendogs Doggy Fashion Show
Date: September 24, 2005

To promote Nintendogs, and the day before a Nintendo World Store appearance, Mr. Miyamoto appeared as a judge at Nintendogs Doggy Fashion Show at Riverside Park in New York City. There are many articles about this event written before it happened, promoting it. We have several pictures that seem to be professionally shot, perhaps by Nintendo themselves. Yet somehow there appear to be no first-hand accounts, not even by a blogger, of this event. I find it hard to believe no news outlet sent someone to report on this.
Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo (2007)
Date: December 7, 2007
Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto held a press conference to promote the Wii at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan. There must be some local press coverage of the event, video even, but I haven’t found anything more than some pictures from Alamy.
Famitsu Awards
Date: April 26, 2008
https://www.wired.com/2008/04/famitsu-awards/
Famitsu’s 1,000th issue was released on February 15, 2008. Seemingly both in celebration of this, and to announce the winners of their 2007 reader’s choice awards, Famitsu held an event at The Grand Hall on April 26, 2008.
Mr. Miyamoto won the Most Valuable Person award and gave a brief speech. The Famitsu article seems to have a transcription of everything Mr. Miyamoto said. The Wired article has a translation of the first part of the speech. There was a video exclusive to Famitsu’s Wave TV of the event that is no longer available, but someone out there must have it.
Wii Music Hotel Interviews
Approximate Date: October 23, 2008
Links: https://web.archive.org/web/20150528225248/http://www.wired.com/2008/10/miyamoto-wii-mu/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whW1qJZwxs0&t=1081s
According to a Chris Kohler Wired interview for Wii Music Mr. Miyamoto talked “to about a dozen members of the videogame press in a hotel conference room here Oct. 23.”. The first picture is from this Wired interview and does not feature Chris Kohler. The two people in the middle are presumably other members of the press. They may have published articles or videos about this event, which have been lost. If you recognize either of them it would helpful in finding their work.
The second picture is from very brief footage shown during CNBC’s 2020 The Rise Of Nintendo documentary. This is almost certainly from the same Wii Music event and identifying this journalist would be helpful to finding any interview he published about the event. He must have worked under the NBC umbrella during this time.
There were many interviews about Wii Music around this time and it’s not clear which took place at this hotel event where Mr. Miyamoto wore this diamond shirt. The following definitely feature the shirt and are almost certainly from the hotel event: Chris Scullion for Official Nintendo Magazine, Daniel Terdiman for CNet, an unknown person for Edge, and an unknown person for 3sat neues. If a Channel 4 interview took place at this same hotel event, it was in London.
If there were 12 press people at this event it still leaves several people and interviews unaccounted for. These interviews may have become website articles, videos, or magazine features.
Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo (2009)
Approximate Date: April 9, 2009
Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto once again held a press conference at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan, this time for the DSi. And once again, some pictures are all I have about this event.
Samurai Warriors 3 Presentation

https://web.archive.org/web/20090808073926/https://www.famitsu.com/game/news/1226458_1124.html
Samurai Warriors 3 had a mode based on The Mysterious Murasame Castle, an NES game which Shigeru Miyamoto does not seem to have worked on. Yet he made an appearance at this event to promote Samurai Warriors 3 and spoke to the crowd. There are quotes from the Japanese media which may not be a complete record of what was said, and are untranslated. I am hopeful that there is also a video of the event.
ASIAGRAPH Award 2009 Speech
Date: October 24, 2009
Mr. Miyamoto was awarded an ASIAGRAPH award and these articles report on his speech and include some quotes. I hope to find a more complete accounting of his speech and possibly a video.

https://game.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/347371.html
Shigeru Miyamoto was given the Special Achievement Prize at this conference and spoke with Akitoshi Kawazu on stage. It’s hard to tell how much of the event was recounted by the Japanese sources. If there is a video of the whole thing, that would be a valuable find, and very little has been translated of what we do have.
Paris 3DS Hotel Press Conference
Date: April 22, 2011
Shigeru Miyamoto held a press conference about the 3DS in what is described only as a “Parisian hotel”. Gamekyo wrote a report on it in French which does not cover the whole event. Digital Trends translated some of this report.
The audio of what seems to be the full event has been found, but it is untranslated. I am hoping there is video of the event, more French reporting, or a translation.
Musical Tribute To 30 Years of Nintendo’s Super Mario
Date: September 13, 2015
There was some sort of musical performance for Super Mario’s 30th anniversary, on September 13th, 2015. It is very difficult to find information about it since Super Mario Bros. 30th Anniversary Live, another musical performance that was part of Super Mario’s 30th anniversary, took place on September 20th and 21st. This event took place in Tokyo, but I can’t find any information about what venue. A person in a Mario mascot costume blew out candles on a cake and Mr. Miyamoto thanked the crowd after singing Happy Birthday. He probably said more during the event. A video of the event seems unlikely to surface, but more substantial reporting would help.
Super Mario Bros 30th Anniversary Live Concert in Tokyo
Date: September 21, 2015
Link: https://www.mariowiki.com/Super_Mario_Bros._30th_Anniversary_Live
Speaking of Super Mario Bros.’ 30th Anniversary Live Concert, there are fan recordings of the Osaka performance, which do feature Mr. Miyamoto speaking at certain points, but I cannot find anything of the Tokyo performance, which likely would too. Perhaps somewhere on the Japanese internet such a recording, or at least reporting, exists.
The Legend of Zelda 30th Anniversary Concert

https://www.famitsu.com/news/201610/02117293.html
https://www.famitsu.com/news/201610/02117293.html?page=2
Nintendo Everything summarized a Famitsu report about this concert event, which briefly featured Mr. Miyamoto addressing the audience. Everything he said may have been documented, but I would like to see more reporting on this event and have a formal translation if Nintendo Everything just machine translated it. A video of this portion of the event would be a nice find, but is unlikely to exist.
Person of Cultural Merit Award Ceremony
Date: October 29, 2019
Mr. Miyamoto was honored with the Person of Cultural Merit Award in October of 2019. The source only gives some brief quotes that be incomplete. There is likely video of this ceremony somewhere that I would like to include.

This speech Mr. Miyamoto gave to commemorate the merging of Sonobe is not well preserved. One person on a blog platform reported on it, but a lot is missing. A video recording would be ideal, but seems unlikely. A transcription of the speech would also be satisfactory.

The premiere event for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie in Japan was reported on, but there doesn’t seem to be a complete transcript. Perhaps a video exists somewhere.
Television
Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation Interview
Approximate Date: 1986
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGS_M2S6kJQ&t=198s
This footage of Nintendo developers at work is likely incomplete. Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation apparently has it in their archives, as they shared this clip in 2023, but it is unlikely to be available in full anywhere online.
Unknown Japanese Interview
Approximate Date: 1990
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RznLrM2J8aE
The person who posted this to YouTube does not state where this footage came from. The subtitles have a machine translation. The actual interview seems to be unedited, is about 24 minutes long, and cuts off abruptly, followed by B-roll footage of Nintendo offices. The footage was likely to be edited and used on Japanese TV, but for what show on what channel is unknown. It would be nice to have more information and to see the final product.
Unknown Super Mario 64 Interview
Approximate Date: 1996
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjRJAmtuaP8
Little is known about this interview that features Super Mario 64 beta footage. It seems to be a VHS recording of a Japanese television show. An unknown man talks to Shigeru Miyamoto at a dinner table and then a Super Mario 64 promotional video or commercial plays. Knowing what show this was, when it aired, or the identity of the other man would all be helpful.
Space World 1996 Super Mario 64 Demonstration
Approximate Date: November 22-24, 1996
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZXA2pzrLlo
This was apparently found on Niconico, a Japanese video sharing site. The video was taken during Space World 1996 and features Shigeru Miyamoto talking about and referring to footage of N64 games, and then cuts to footage of demonstrations on the show floor. It would be nice to know where the footage is from and if there is more. The subtitles contain an English translation but I don’t know if it is machine translated, or who translated it.
Sajber Interview
Approximate Date: March 20-22, 1998 or October 9-11, 1998
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3KVTJCe68Y
Sajber was a Swedish TV show. It isn’t known if this was from the Spring or the Fall Tokyo Game Show. There is likely more than 90 seconds to this interview and I would like to have it saved but it is likely only recoverable if someone finds a VHS tape with it.
TechTV Video Interview With Lauren Fielder
Date: January 8, 1999
Links: https://www.zeldadungeon.net/wiki/Interview:Tech_TV_January_8th_1999
http://www.techtv.com/%20extendedplay/videofeatures/story/0,24330,2185068,00.htm
It appears that this entire interview for TechTV was transcribed, but it must have aired on TV and we are missing the video. The TechTV link seems to have been their page about this segment or episode, but it was not archived. This was very likely the show Xplay specifically, although it may have still been known as GameSpot TV. Little has been preserved of these early episodes.
GameSpot TV: Legend of Zelda Retrospective
Approximate Date: 2000
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32SZ42m9COA&t=73s
I might be overthinking this, but it seems unlikely that GameSpot TV (later Xplay) interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto on video to talk about The Legend of Zelda for a couple minutes for use in a Zelda retrospective. It seems like this footage must be from somewhere else, or taken for another purpose, but I don’t know where or why. It would also be good to find a more specific date than 2000.
Bits
Approximate Date: September 3, 2000
https://spritecell.com/shigeru-miyamoto-1999-2000/#Bits
Bits was a show that aired on Channel 4. There is a very brief interview with Mr. Miyamoto in Series 4 Part 3. The teaser for this episode from the previous episode shows unique footage that is talked over. The Miyamoto Shrine contains a transcript of something from Bits, but it’s not the whole thing. The full interview was likely posted in text form on the Bits website, but it doesn’t seem to have preserved by the Wayback Machine. I’m not sure if there is more to the video version or the text version out there.
Unknown Post-Space World 2001 presentation Q & A
Approximate Date: September 15th, 2001 or later (filmed August 23, 2001)
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OnKgflNhdw
This group Q & A about the GameCube seems to have aired on Japanese television but I don’t know what channel or show it was. A few other people give their take after the footage of Mr. Miyamoto is shown. There is likely more to it. Finding out more context about this footage would help to finding a more complete version, as would a translation.
CNBC Asia
Approximate Date: December 29, 2001
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20020124041150/http://nintendo.cloudchaser.com/news/index.php?view=375
Cloudchaser Nintendo transcribed this interview from CNBC Asia, a channel in Singapore. It seems like a very short interview so it may not be complete. Finding a video of the original interview seems unlikely, but I would like to include it in the archive.
MTV Germany
Approximate Date: 2002
Link: https://old.reddit.com/r/n64/comments/ajc2v7/i_did_an_interview_with_shigeru_miyamoto_in_2002/
Reddit user AndKrem posted to Reddit about interviewing Shigeru Miyamoto for MTV Germany in 2002. I messaged this person and they were able to tell me that the interview was about the GameCube and was not posted to MTV’s website. The user has since been suspended so we’re not likely to get any further details. I have looked around MTV Germany’s website and YouTube page and found nothing. Knowing what show the interview may have appeared on would be helpful, but our only hope of recovering this interview would probably be an old VHS tape that happened to have it.
Gamekings
Approximate Date: February, 2003
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/02/24/miyamoto-confirms-new-zelda
Mr. Miyamoto apparently gave an hour long interview to Dutch journalists. IGN reported on it and says there is more to the interview in the magazine Power Unlimited, which has been preserved, and the TV show Gamekings, which hasn’t. There seems to be no mention of this interview on Gamekings’ YouTube channel or website. The magazine contains some bits of the interview that IGN did not translate as well.
Extended Play Wind Waker Interview
Date: March 21, 2003
GameSpot TV/Extended Play/X-Play aired several interviews with Mr. Miyamoto, but we don’t have any video footage of this particular one and I would like to see it preserved.
Unknown CNBC Interview
Approximate Date: May 9, 2006
Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSuWOw7Ka3s&t=1552s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whW1qJZwxs0&t=1085s
CNBC aired Game On! The Unauthorized History Of Video Games on November 15, 2006, featuring Mr. Miyamoto in front of a blue background with the Nintendo logo. He talks about the origin of Donkey Kong’s name.
In 2020 CNBC aired The Rise Of Nintendo and footage of Mr. Miyamoto that is clearly from the same interview as Game On! is shown where he talks about “being the oldest game developer at these kind of events”. Nintendo’s 2006 E3 stage presentation features of lot of blue backgrounds, making it the likely time and location of the original interview.
It’s possible that the full interview was released in some way near E3, but I haven’t been able to find any evidence of this. Game On! was likely being worked on at the time and it’s also possible that CNBC got an interview with Mr. Miyamoto solely for the purposes of using footage in the documentary that would be released later in the year. CNBC is also not necessarily the channel that conducted the interview, any group within NBC could have been responsible. If the full version of the interview was ever aired, or if a website article was ever written around this interview, I would like to preserve it.
TV Asahi: TV Game Sousenkyo
Approximate Date: December 28, 2021
Links: https://www.tv-asahi.co.jp/tvgame_sousenkyo/
TV Asahi polled over 50,000 people about the best games of all time for this special. Mr. Miyamoto is shown talking briefly about several of the games that he worked on. The full special used to be hosted on bilibili, but it is gone now.

IGN Pocket
Date: May 13, 2000
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20000619181836/https://pocket.ign.com/news/19355.html
I no longer remember why I was convinced there was a video version of this interview. Given some other IGN videos of the era it was likely a .mov file.
History of Zelda 「ゼルダの伝説」の過去から未来へ
Approximate Date: June 22, 2000
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTQSM_YH7ac&t=1584s
This documentary about the history of The Legend of Zelda series contains an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and is untranslated. However, Zelda no Video is an updated and expanded version and has been translated. Looking through machine translation of the transcripts it seems there is a small amount of footage unique to History of Zelda 「ゼルダの伝説」の過去から未来へ. If there is, it would be nice to have a translation of it. It’s completely possible that I am mistaken and that Zelda no Video uses all of the footage from this original. It’s a bit hard to tell without knowing Japanese.
GameCube Controller Demo
Approximate Date: May 17-19, 2001
Link: https://www.ign.com/articles/2001/07/19/miyamoto-controller-demo
This was originally exclusive to IGNinsider, a section of the IGN website that you had to pay to access. It was later posted for free, but the date on this article is the date it was made available for free, not when it was originally posted. There is a reference to the “show floor” and there is a picture of Mr. Miyamoto wearing a tan jacket and black shirt that he wore during E3, so we can confidently say this happened May 17-19, 2001. The picture shows Mr. Miyamoto holding the disk for Luigi’s Mansion and says the video (now lost) features a lot of laser pointer.
Mr. Miyamoto gave a GameCube controller demo at Space World in 2000, wearing a tan jacket and black shirt. Looking through a machine translation of the transcript this is definitely a different demo, and there’s no visible laser pointer. This means Mr. Miyamoto gave two GameCube controller demonstrations in front of a live audience wearing the same clothes nine months apart.
It would be nice to have the 23MB video of this second GameCube controller demo and the exact date this was originally posted. The original file name was miyamotocontroller.mov.
Nintendo Book Winter 2002
Approximate Date: 2002
Nintendo Book Winter was a kind of catalog showcasing upcoming game releases that came with a DVD. The DVD contains Mr. Miyamoto talking about The Legend of Zelda series, which was translated. No video footage from this DVD seems to have surfaced on the internet, and I would like to make sure it is preserved.
AOL Games
Approximate Date: 2006
Link: https://www.engadget.com/2006-05-12-joystiq-video-shigeru-miyamoto-interview.html
At the bottom of this Joystiq interview (which has an entry below), there is a link to a different video interview with AOL Games. This was a flash video and has not been archived by Flashpoint. It was probably published in 2006, but 2005 is plausible too.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl Q & A With Masahiro Sakurai
Approximate Date: May 11, 2006
https://sourcegaming.info/2015/11/19/investigating-the-newest-smash/
Famitsu held a Q & A with Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Sakurai about Super Smash Bros. Brawl. We have a full translated transcript, but there was a video of the event available on Famitsu Wave TV, which seems to be some kind of service that could be subscribed to.
Joystiq Video: Shigeru Miyamoto Interview With Christopher Grant
Date: May 12, 2006
Links: https://www.engadget.com/2006-05-12-joystiq-video-shigeru-miyamoto-interview.html
We have the transcript of this Joystiq interview, but there was also a video, which the Wayback Machine only saved 200MB of. The webpage says they are working on a torrent of the video file, which doesn’t seem to have ever come about.
The filename of the video was JoystiqE3_Miyamoto.mov, the size was 542.2MB, it was 25:25 long, the resolution was 480×360, and it was a 3ivx Quicktime file. Someone out there must have downloaded this.
Channel 4: Inspiring the video games master video footage
Date: October 22, 2008
There are several video files of this interview sprinkled around the article, none of which were saved by the Wayback Machine, which I would like to save. I think it is unlikely this aired on television because it would have been more well-known if it had.
Popular Mechanics Video
Date: October 19, 2009
There’s an unarchived flash video in this article that I assume is a video of at least part of the interview. The text makes no mention of it, but including flash videos in articles does not seem to be common practice for Popular Mechanics so I don’t know what else it could be.
G4TV: Shigeru Miyamoto E3 2009 Interview
Date: June 15, 2009
I must have watched this video at some point, since I summarized it, but apparently I never saved it, and the live web version went down with G4TV’s second collapse, and also the Wayback Machine didn’t save it.
Shy Mukerjee Interview
Approximate Date: March 7, 2013
Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/wiiu/comments/19po0c/i_will_ask_shigeru_miyamoto_your_questions_this/
On March 5, 2013 shy_bc posted to subreddit /r/wiiu about an upcoming interview with Shigeru Miyamoto and wanted commenters to give him questions to ask. The interview was to be posted to his YouTube channel but it never was.
I contacted Shy and he said that the interview did happen, that he still had the footage, and that he’d like to post it someday. Some of the things that they talked about included the Year of Luigi, Metroid, and his favorite Pokémon. Please do not contact Shy, he will post the interview if he wishes to someday.
Charlotte McDonnell Interview
Approximate Date: March 7, 2013
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eyf21h_tLSQ&t=857s
On an episode of Doughboys Charlotte McDonnell speaks about doing an interview with Shigeru Miyamoto to promote Super Mario Maker. I am guessing this was part of the same YouTuber interview tour that Shy Mukerjee was part of. Charlotte explains that she never posted the video of the interview because a Nintendo of America employee was sleeping in the background.
iHasCupquake Dreamers and Doers Interview

Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EMe1kO41w8
https://dreamersanddoers.co/the-legend-of-shigeru-miyamoto/
At the end of her June 22, 2016 video where she interviews Mr. Miyamoto, iHasCupquake says that the rest of the interview is available on the website Dreamers and Doers, a site that no longer exists. The specific page it was hosted on was never archived by the Wayback Machine. She says that this part of the interview is more about creativity. It is probably a video, and may have been an unlisted YouTube video.
I have attempted to contact iHasCupquake about this but have never gotten a response. If you would like to ask her to release the full interview, go for it, but please be polite.
Game Informer: Miyamoto Speaks To GI About The 3DS
Approximate Date: June 15, 2010
Link: https://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/06/15/miyamoto-interview.aspx
Dan Ryckert talked to Shigeru Miyamoto about the 3DS for Game Informer. This interview seems to have only existed as a Flash Video on their website. It was up for a few years before no longer being available. I have attempted to contact Dan Ryckert, but got no response. Game Informer did respond via e-mail, and added the note on the page, saying it was no longer available due to a technical issue. Since this was a Flash Video there is only a small chance someone out there saved it, and it seems unlikely that Dan Ryckert would have a copy.
Books And Strategy Guides
interview with Yuji Horii
Approximate Date: 1989
Links: https://web.archive.org/web/20230210012154/https://glitterberri.com/miyamoto-horii-discussion/
We seem to have the full translation of this discussion with Yuji Horii, yet we don’t know where it’s from. It was found on Game Staff List Association Japan’s webpage, who don’t always list their sources. It’s said to be from 1989, but my best guess is that it’s another discussion with Mr. Miyamoto from Yuji Horii’s 1990 book Rainbow-Colored Dip Switches: Famicom Industry Quest. I would like to know the source.
Super Mario Kart Japanese Official Strategy Guide
Approximate Date: August 27, 1992

Shmuplations has translated this interview from a Japanese Super Mario Kart guide but I can’t identify its name, nor find a scan of it. I would like to include scans of the original.
Star Fox Essay
Approximate Date: 1993
Link: https://shmuplations.com/starfox/
Shmuplations has also translated this piece of writing about Star Fox, but where it came from is unknown. This was found on Game Staff List Association Japan, who often didn’t cite their source. A strategy guide seems likely, but a gaming magazine is possible.
Introduction to Game Design

A book translated by shmuplations, but without scans.
電視遊戯時代: テレビゲームの現在 (The Current State of Video Games as Seen by Creators)
Date: June 1, 1994
Link: http://www.gamearchive.jp/1gap/4rep/ref/intro/dennsiyuugi.htm
This book contains a conversation between Shigeru Miyamoto and Satoshi Tajiri. Someone made me aware of this book and showed me a full translation they had been working on, but didn’t want it to be shared until they had polished it. I have waited for over a year. If someone wants to scan it, please go ahead.
Yoshi’s Island Interview
Approximate Date: 1995

Yes, another shmuplations interview with an unknown source. A Japanese strategy guide seems likely.
任天堂公式ガイドブック スーパーマリオ64 (Nintendo Official Guidebook Super Mario 64), スーパーマリオ64 マリオ・ザ・テクニック (Super Mario 64 Mario the Technician)
Approximate Date: August 10, 1996
Links: https://shmuplations.com/mario64/
http://www.a-suma.com/old/book/gb/sti.htm#1
This shmuplations page has two interviews from Super Mario 64 strategy guides, which are not named, but there is a link to what I think is a Mario fan site and archive that lists several strategy guides. From what I can tell the guides that are being translated are 任天堂公式ガイドブック スーパーマリオ64 (Nintendo Official Guidebook Super Mario 64) and スーパーマリオ64 マリオ・ザ・テクニック (Super Mario 64 Mario the Technician). I cannot find scans of either.
Official Mario Kart 64 Guidebook
Approximate Date: December 14, 1996
Links: https://shmuplations.com/mariokart64/
Shmuplations translated the official Japanese Mario Kart 64 strategy guide. There a few pictures of the developers, but the full scans would be nice to have.
Unknown Pokémon Gold and Silver Interview with Satoshi Tajiri and Tsunekazu Ishihara
Approximate Date: 1997
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20111130222502/http://www.glitterberri.com/pokemon-gold-silver/pokemon-2
Glitterberri translated this interview about Pokémon Gold and Silver that was found on Game Staff List Association Japan, who do not list their sources. It is likely from a magazine or a strategy guide. I would like to document the source and provide scans of the original.
スーパーヒットゲーム学 (Super Hit Game Studies)
Date: December 1, 1998
Link: https://www.fusosha.co.jp/books/detail/9784594025052
Kenji Eno wrote this book where he talks to Toru Iwatani, Yu Suzuki, Yuji Horii, Masanobu Endo, Kazuo Iida, and Shigeru Miyamoto. From what I can gather with machine translation the discussions center on how to make hit games and about the creation of various games. Mr. Miyamoto apparently talks about how Pac-Land was an inspiration to him. This is a pretty obscure book that seems to have been overlooked, but it contains conversations between some big name developers. A scan would be pretty noteworthy.
Game Freak: The Creative Group Rewriting the Rules in the World of Play
Approximate Date: September 1, 2000
Links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOkpD6uqsxI&t=600s
This book on the history of Pokémon includes interviews with some of the people involved in making the series, including Shigeru Miyamoto. Some of it was translated for use in a DidYouKnowGaming video. A full translation of the interview would be nice to include. I would be unlikely to include a scan as the book seems to still be sold.
Super Mario Sunshine 2002 Developer Interview
Approximate Date: 2002
Link: https://shmuplations.com/mariosunshine/
This page from shmuplations contains two interviews about Super Mario Sunshine. The first is accounted for, but the second is another mysterious entry from Game Staff List Association with no indication of where it’s from. This features Mr. Miyamoto along with Yoshiaki Koizumi and Takashi Tezuka. A Japanese strategy guide seems like the most likely source. I would like to know where this is from and to preserve the original.
Game Generations: Spieleentwickler und Szenekenner erzählen, wie Computer- und Videospiele unsere Freunde wurden
Date: August 1, 2008
This German book, whose English title would be Game Generations: Game Devs and Experts Tell How Computer and Video Games Became Our Friends, is a history of video games that features interviews with several people involved in making video games. There doesn’t seem to have ever been an English version.
Newspapers
Kyoto Shinbun: To All of You Who Hail From Tanba
Approximate Date: 2001
The book Nintendo Magic: Winning the Videogame Wars has the following to say:
As Miyamoto, a native of the town of Sonobe (now part of Nantan City) wrote in the opening sentences for a 2001 column entitled “To All of You Who Hail From Tanba” that ran in the Kyoto Shinbun:
The setting for games like Super Mario Brothers and Pikmin comes directly from mountains like Komugiyama and Tenjinyama. I scrambled around the shrines at their peaks and down their slopes, detective badge pinned to my shirt as I searched for caves…
I haven’t had any luck finding this 2001 Japanese newspaper column. Their website doesn’t seem to have articles that old. I am not aware of the state of Japanese newspaper preservation.
Mainichi Shimbun
Approximate Date: November, 2001
Link: https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/6756/miyamoto-speaks-with-mainichi
Nintendo World Report is reporting on a translation by Fennec Fox about this newspaper interview, which was posted to his site Video Senki. The page on Video Senki where it appeared does not seem to have been archived and I don’t know of any way of finding Japanese newspaper articles. It’s possible that this isn’t the full interview. Having a scan and the exact date and name of the article would be nice.
Korean Newspaper Interviews
Approximate Date: Before 2023
Links: https://www.chosun.com/
I don’t remember where I saw this, but someone was talking about the Shigeru Miyamoto Archive in Korean and said that he had been interviewed by Chosun Ilbo and
JoongAng Ilbo. These are South Korean newspapers. I have searched the websites of both and found some articles about Nintendo and Mr. Miyamoto, but no interviews with him. It’s very possible that not everything is kept online, or this person may have been thinking of articles that reported on something he said elsewhere.
I don’t think I know of any interviews Mr. Miyamoto has done with a Korean outlet, but it seems plausible that it has happened. Any information about interviews with these newspapers would be welcome.
Web
Videogames.com: The Legend of Miyamoto
Approximate Date: January 28, 1999
The fifth page in Moira Muldoon’s interview with Shigeru Miyamoto has a link to a sixth page entitled Wrapping Up, but it was not saved in the Wayback Machine. I have attempted to contact Moira Muldoon, but received no response.
Core Magazine, As Reported on By Nintendo World Report
Approximate Date: August 5, 2000
Link: https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/4897/miyamoto-talks-dolphin
Core Magazine seemed to be a website that did not have a physical magazine. Their interviews page was archived 10 days after this article by Nintendo World Report, yet this interview does not appear on it, which is quite strange. There is probably more to the interview than appears on NWR and I would like to preserve it.
CG8
Date: November 12, 2000
What is CG8? I have never been able to find anything about this publication. Their interviewer here is just identified as “Kris”. Given that there is a specific date given to this interview it is unlikely to be a magazine, and is most likely a website. Please tell me anything about what CG8 is or even who Kris is so I can try to preserve the original.
Alternative-Reality
Approximate Date: May 24, 2002
Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6tjrr_wnOw
The interviewer, Antonio Jodice, introduces the outlet he represents at the beginning of this interview, but it is indistinct. According to an article he would later write, it was Alternative-Reality. I haven’t been able to find anything on what this outlet is, but it was likely an Italian website. I would like to preserve the original website, or at least identify the URL.
Newsweek
Approximate Date: April 3, 2007
Links: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/game-platforms/miyamoto-talks-third-party-developers-online-gaming
https://www.gamezone.com/originals/miyamoto-industry-will-grow-by-doing-things-different/
A few outlets reported on this interview with N’Gai Croal for Newsweek, but the page was not preserved with the Wayback Machine. I would like the full interview to be saved.
GamePro: Miyamoto: I was worried about US Wii launch
Date: April 2, 2007
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20071011165434/http://gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=107842
A short bit of this interview appeared in GamePro magazine, but the full thing was posted to their website. Unfortunately, it spanned two pages and only the first was preserved by the Wayback Machine.
Nikkei: Nintendo is a talent agency Mario’s father behind the hit movie
Date: April 20, 2023
Links: https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOUF14CJO0U3A410C2000000/
This Nikkei interview requires a subscription to view more than the first part of and the whole thing needs to be preserved before it can be translated. Nintendo Everything reported on part of it. It’s possible this appeared in the physical Nikkei newspaper too.
Other And Unknown
Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Nintendo, Co., Ltd. Deposition
Date: January 11, 1983
Link: https://spritecell.com/shigeru-miyamoto-1983-1996/#Universal_City_Studios_Inc_v_Nintendo_Co_Ltd
Shigeru Miyamoto’s deposition in the case of Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Nintendo, Co., Ltd. is 86 pages long, but only 24 pages are available in the scans provided by the Gaming Historian. Apparently old court documents are sometimes destroyed. This is a particularly important historical document and if the full deposition exists anywhere it should be preserved.
Unknown The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Essay
Approximate Date: 1998
This piece of writing is about the development of Ocarina of Time and is dated 1998. I have no idea where it came from, the original source could be a magazine, a strategy guide, or a newspaper column for all I know. I also don’t know who this is that copied it, but it was likely Game Staff List Association.
Conference Call
Approximate Date: March 28, 2002
This is described as a conference call where Mr. Miyamoto and Mr. Iwata talk about the company’s sales in the future. I thought this might mean an earnings call with investors, but Nintendo’s investor relations page doesn’t have anything relevant in this time period. IGN’s source is Bloomberg News, and I’m assuming they mean a story that appeared on their website, but they don’t link to anything, and I’ve never been able to find that original source. It’s also possible the source was Bloomberg’s TV channel.
Nintendo Power
Date: April, 2002
Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20090129162427/http://miyamotoshrine.com/theman/interviews/04022.shtml
Mr. Miyamoto answers questions that were sent in here, and the source is supposedly Nintendo Power. However, all of the questioners are from European cities, and Nintendo Power was an American magazine. Mr. Miyamoto was in Germany around this time and did interviews with several German outlets, so the true source is likely a European website or magazine. If it was a magazine they must have known about the upcoming visit for at least a month in order to solicit questions. It’s possible the source is Club Nintendo, the official Nintendo magazine in Germany.
Discussion with Yasumi Matsuno
Approximate Date: 2003
Link: https://shmuplations.com/matsunoxmiyamoto/
Another find from the Game Staff List Association. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance comes up but the conversation isn’t really about it, so a strategy guide seems unlikely. It doesn’t seem like something a magazine would print, either. It’s possible this is from game design book.
Japanese radio interview
Approximate Date: September 4-5, 2005
Supposedly the full transcript of this Japanese radio interview has been preserved, which must have been just a couple minutes long. It is extremely unlikely that the full audio will ever surface, but I’d like to at least know what radio station this was.
Game Screen Edge Frustration Interview
Approximate Date: 2006
From a 2012 GameKult interview:
Q: In an interview from 2006, you related being frustrated by the edges of TV screens. Was the Wii U already in the back of your mind?
Miyamoto: It’s difficult to trace the line from words to acts! Sometimes I think out loud, but I don’t think that was in relation to the Wii U. But it’s true that with the panorama view that allows you to look around you on the gamepad’s screen, you do get out of the TV.
I know of no interview where Shigeru Miyamoto talks about being frustrated with the edges of TV screens. GameKult is a French outlet and 2006 was the year that Mr. Miyamoto was awarded the Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture, so this was likely an interview conducted in France at that time. I have looked through GameKult’s archives and they do not seem to have interviewed him in 2006. This could have been a television, magazine, or website interview and it was likely a French outlet. It could have even been from his acceptance speech.
Nikkei: Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Mario movie, three generations should visit Released on the 24th
Date: April 22, 2026
https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOUF204M00Q6A420C2000000/
This interview for Nikkei requires a paid subscription to view fully. Nintendo Everything reported on a portion of it.
A machine translation of the first part says “an interview with Nihon Keizai Shimbun and other newspapers on the 22nd”, so perhaps this was a press Q & A event. It may have appeared in physical newspapers, magazines, or their websites.
Complete, But Untranslated
These are interviews or writings where all of the scans, texts, or videos are preserved, but they are untranslated. Most are completely untranslated, but a few have a partial translation or a translation that was not released to the public. Please see the linked Shigeru Miyamoto Archive entry for details.
These are listed in chronological order by language. Magazines have their specific issue listed.
