Summary: Work on the Nintendo Museum is underway. Looking at the exhibits it feels like Nintendo has reached a milestone. After starting as a hanafuda and karuta playing card company Nintendo eventually expanded into video games, where they have taken their own path.
About a decade ago they realized they couldn’t reach everyone with just video games, and those initiatives are gaining traction now. Donkey Kong Country will open at Universal Studios Japan and Super Nintendo World is coming to Orlando and Singapore.
It’s more important that people choose Nintendo than what game they buy. Parents should want to play games themselves as well as give them to their children. Their efforts to create home runs will keep Nintendo an important brand for families.
He is the oldest director, but he is not concerned about transferring game development to the younger generation, it is going smoothly.
His days are boring when he isn’t creating, he is involved with things like Pikmin Bloom and visual content.
He will still be involved with games, but also wants to create new IPs.
Nintendo of America: Nintendo Museum Direct
Publication Date: August 19, 2024
Subject(s): Nintendo Museum, Nintendo’s history
Format: Promotional video (subtitled)
People: Shigeru Miyamoto
Video:
Notes: This was the first look at the Nintendo Museum. Mr. Miyamoto shows off several displays before its opening.
The attraction with hyakunin isshu cards displayed on screens on the floor is something Mr. Miyamoto designed for another museum almost 20 years ago, as he talks about during his 2007 Game Developers Conference keynote.
Summary: He’s speaking from the Nintendo Museum which is opening soon. It’s built near the factory where Nintendo made hanafuda cards. It feels nostalgic to him.
On the second floor they have displays of Nintendo products, mostly video games. There are giant controllers hanging from the ceiling.
Being founded in 1889, Nintendo worked on other forms of home entertainment before video games, like hanafuda and karuta cards.
The Famicom and Nintendo Entertainment System look very different. The game boxes looked different too. Games that Nintendo published are displayed, he hopes you see some that you played. There are screens that show footage of the games being played, with directional speakers.
This display has products that involve moving your body.
Here’s a display of how the ? Block has changed.
This area shows how Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda games have changed over time.
Here they have Nintendo products from before they made video games. Here’s a diazo copy machine and a baby stroller. There’s board games, RC cards, and pitching machines. A light gun was the turning point after which they started making arcade games. The Color TV-Game 6 and Color TV-Game 15 were Nintendo’s first household gaming devices. This is a fraction of what they have on display.
On the first floor there are interactive exhibits, like where the floor is a screen that you can stand on and play hyakunin isshu.
You’ll get an entry pass when you enter the museum that comes with digital coins that you can spend in eight places.
You can try the Ultra Machine, an indoor pitching machine. The rooms with them recreate what a Japanese house may have looked like at the time. Try hitting various things in the room.
They also have a Zapper & Scope SP activity. Nintendo turned bowling alleys into Laser Clay shooting galleries in the 1970s. At the exhibit you can fire quickly with the Zapper, or use the Super Scope.
There’s also an area where you can play games from the Famicom to the Wii, but the controllers are huge.
That was just a glimpse of the museum. You can also play hanafuda without knowing the rules, and there will be workshops where you can make your own cards. There’s a shop with exclusive merchandise.
Nintendo has made many types of entertainment during its history. Although what they make has changed their desire to entertain families never has. Nintendo employees have given their all to make the museum, which will open October 2nd.

Summary: He’s driven by having fun.
Hiroshi Yamauchi used to tell them not to pick fights with other companies because they were weak. Gunpei Yokoi used to give him feedback.
Nintendo doesn’t go in the opposite direction just for the sake of doing it, they are trying to find what makes Nintendo special. Everyone is going in one direction with artificial intelligence, but Nintendo wants to go a different way.
They want the Nintendo Museum to be understandable to anyone, regardless of what language they speak or their culture.
Maybe once they’ve made 10 movies they’ll open a theater next door to the museum.

Notes: According to a few articles (1) (2) there was a press conference at the Nintendo Museum during a preview event on September 25th where invited members of the press asked Mr. Miyamoto questions. No one was allowed to record video of the event. IGN does not have a full transcript but the Japanese outlets seem to.
Summary: The Nintendo Museum is like something they are not supposed to do, Hiroshi Yamauchi would have told them to stop.
They wanted the museum to be appropriate for their identity. Nintendo connects to people through their products rather than promoting Nintendo itself. They have thought about this more as things have changed.
Hiroshi Yamauchi used to say that companies spent a lot of money on advertising so their products would sell better, but his philosophy was that it’s better not to sell something than to rely on advertising.
Nintendo has built up a collection of items over the years, some has been thrown away and some has deteriorated. They’ve realized the value in preserving these things.
It was a different kind of experience to work on a museum, but once they were making constant changes and fixes it felt like making a video game.
One to two hundred new people join Nintendo every year and he gives them a two hour talk, telling them about how Nintendo operates. He doesn’t look forward to doing this anymore. They thought it would be good to show the public what kind of company Nintendo is, too.
They thought they would only show products at the museum, but he realized people would like to see behind the curtain, too.
His favorite exhibit is the Wii, because it’s special to him. He and Satoru Iwata wanted to make something that anyone could enjoy. It makes him happy that more people started playing games because of the Wii.

Summary: Their development costs go up every year, but what they make is more important than what it costs. It’s important to find new ideas that are worth working on, and to polish them.
You can make appealing products without huge costs. Games can be made by small teams in a short period of time.
He is ordinary, not a genius. He gives a talk to new employees every year and people say he is ordinary.
Since it would be more fun if he didn’t have to work, he often thinks about how to work more efficiently, and how to make a project a hit, since that makes work in the future easier.
There’s three parts to his annual talks to new employees, the first covers Nintendo’s history, the second is about Nintendo’s strengths and values, and the third is about game design.
New developers who are avid gamers often want to make upgraded versions of their favorite games. He explains that they have to observe the world and make a video game out of those elements, game design is about planning. His annual talks last about two hours.

IGN: The Big Shigeru Miyamoto Interview: ’I See Nintendo as Like a Talent Agency and We Have Within Our Roster a Lot of Talented Characters’
Publication Date: May 21, 2025
Subject(s): Super Nintendo World, Pikmin, Donkey Kong, Switch 2, Mine-Cart Madness
Format: Transcribed interview
People: Brian Altano, Wesley Yin-Poole, Shigeru Miyamoto
Notes: According to Brian Altano in a IGN video this interview took place at Universal Studios Orlando and lasted half an hour.
Summary: Since he is an industrial designer and works at Nintendo he has had a dream of working on a theme park, so working with Universal is a dream come true. They had to think about how to make fans happy with a Super Mario themed land and make it not seem fake. When they had made some features that were moving in unison he realized they had made something great.
He wanted to have a wall that you could touch the Power-Up band to and it would make an 8-bit drawing appear. He really likes Easter eggs like that. Players expect a certain kind of unknown in Nintendo’s games, and hitting a block and getting coins in Super Nintendo World is how they translate the game experience to a theme park.
The Power-Up band tracks everything you do. He has worked to expand Pikmin in the last five or six years, not just with Pikmin Bloom and Pikmin 4. He wants people who don’t play games to engage with Pikmin. Mario stays in the Mario universe, but it’s okay for Pikmin to appear with other characters.
Nintendo is like a talent agency. They make a game and then look at their roster to see who would fit. Pikmin have the potential to be used in many things. People can grow out of cute things over time, but Pikmin is appealing to all ages in Japan. It would be fun to make a Pikmin movie or TV show.
He’s lucky he gets to work with so many creative people, and has gotten to work with people outside of gaming, too. He tells younger people that it’s stressful to try to outdo something. It’s important to do something new. The people at Universal want to make something new. He wanted to make a roller coaster that could jump and the people at Universal looked into it.
He still plays a role in creating characters. They evolved Donkey Kong with Donkey Kong Jungle Beat and he was more expressive. They came up with an even more expressive Donkey Kong for The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
One of the most exciting things about the Switch 2 is the ability to patch games. With more powerful hardware there is enough left over for other experiences, which indie developers can make use of. The mouse and GameChat are exciting too.
He loved plastic models as a child and would paint them.
They started working on Mine-Cart Madness with a team of around 10 at Nintendo. Not everyone likes roller coasters, but they are usually the main attraction at a theme park. It felt similar to how the things core gamers talk about are what comes up a lot while people who aren’t core gamers aren’t heard. He wanted to make a roller coaster that three generations could enjoy. With Universal’s help they made a ride that’s on rails that happens to be a roller coaster.
He can’t think of anything that he’s always wanted to do but hasn’t been able to. He wants people who don’t play games to recognize Nintendo characters.
USA Today Travel on Instagram

Subject(s): Super Nintendo World, Donkey Kong Country (Super Nintendo World area)
Format: Interview
People: Unknown USA Today Travel interviewer, Shigeru Miyamoto

Summary: He loves America and music. It’s a dream come true to see Donkey Kong come to life. The biggest appeal of Super Nintendo World is that it can be enjoyed across generations.
The Washington Post: This is Miyamoto. And it’s Nintendo’s world.
Publication Date: May 24, 2025
Subject(s): Super Nintendo World, generations of gamers, IP usage, Pikmin
Format: Transcribed interview
People: Gene Park, Shigeru Miyamoto
Notes: This interview took place at Universal Studios Orlando. The title references several tweets that start with “This is Miyamoto.”.
Summary: In college he made a toy that could help children learn to count. It was expanded into something large enough to walk into. There’s some synchronicity in how Mario has expanded.
They were able to joke about putting the Donkey Kong themed section of Super Nintendo World across from King Kong in City Walk.
Mario was created in a time when parents were concerned about video games. Now that he’s over 70 years old, families have a shared experience of playing video games.
It brings him joy to see families at Super Nintendo World. It also makes him feel old.
He wants people to experience Nintendo’s characters with their whole body, he was thinking about an experience where people can roll around.
Nintendo didn’t use their characters outside of video games so as not to feel restricted, but he changed his mind over time. There is a ceiling to how many people you can reach that way. There are countries without video games.
Mario and Splatoon characters exist within their IPs, but Pikmin can mingle with any IP.
He’s been involved with Super Nintendo World since the planning stages, but walking out of Peach’s Castle and looking at the world made him think “wow”.
Nintendo isn’t trying to compete as a game company, but as an entertainment company trying to make new experiences.
He feels fortunate that by making games he’s been able to work on things like theme parks.
CNET: Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto Discusses the Blending of Worlds Between Movies, Theme Parks and the Switch 2
Publication Date: May 28, 2025
Subject(s): Super Nintendo World
Format: Transcribed interview
People: Scott Stein, Shigeru Miyamoto
Notes: This interview took place at Universal Studios Orlando.
Summary: Universal and Nintendo always want to be making something new and interactive. It’s a challenge to make something interactive both comfortable and user friendly. They decided to use Amiibo as a basis. Universal had been looking into making smartphone applications for its theme parks.
With the original arcade game they could only make 8-bit art. As someone who wanted to be a manga artist he had a vision for what kind of world he wanted to show the player. There’s a lot more realism possible now with games, which opens up new possibilities.
They put a lot of thought into all the myriad ways people have experienced Mario over time and how to make Super Nintendo World feel timeless. They wanted to grasp the essence of 8-bit Mario. Mario has evolved a lot, but the backdrops haven’t as much. They thought a lot about things like the texture of question blocks. They constructed things indoors and then brought them outside to see them in the sun and then made adjustments. They thought people would enter Super Nintendo World through Peach’s Castle at first, but they realized it had to be a pipe.
Virtual and augmented reality evolve, but what’s important is how comfortable they are. They didn’t know if they could finish Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge in time for the opening of the park. Virtual reality headsets aren’t comfortable enough to wear 24 hours a day, which helped him focus on how to make a headset for a theme park.
Nintendo’s focus has gone from games to IP. They have to collaborate with others to make theme parks and movies, and they are trying to make something that only Nintendo could do. He wouldn’t have been able to make games without programmers. Some people might be introduced to Nintendo through a movie or theme park and then want to explore the games.

Nintendo Museum Official Book Vol. 1
Publication Date: October 2, 2025
Subject(s): Super Mario Bros.’ 40th anniversary, working as a team, Famicom’s limitations, good video game music, 2D Mario, spending time together, Mario’s 100th anniversary
Format: Transcribed interview
People: Takashi Tezuka, Koji Kondo, Toshihiko Nakago, Shigeru Miyamoto
Notes: This book, available exclusively at the Nintendo Museum, contains a section celebrating Mario’s 40th anniversary, and a group discussion between four people who worked on Super Mario Bros. You can read more about it on Mario Wiki.
Summary: Takashi Tezuka was newly hired at Nintendo when they were working on Super Mario Bros. He asked Takashi Tezuka to come up with ideas and do various things. He invited Toshihiko Nakago to planning meetings even though he was a programmer. The three of them did most of the work, other than the music.
He learned about programming from talking to Toshihiko Nakago. It felt like Toshihiko Nakago was his editor, telling him the game was never going to get done.
The Famicom had a lot of limitations, he was always thinking of how to make something look good on it. Making Super Mario Bros. was like putting together a puzzle to get it all to fit, and they all had to understand the constraints. They had 10 bytes left over after debugging and wondered what they could do with it.
Competing over who had the most fun ideas would have been self-important, they competed on the fact that nothing else was so jam-packed.
Since players would hear the same music over and over they wanted it to be pleasant. They had discussions about the scope of the music. As someone who started out making arcade games he knew it was important that it be instantly recognizable. He asked the composer to stick to short and catchy phrases. Even in The Legend of Zelda it’s important to use fewer basic melodies. He insisted on tracks that sound good when looped. Underground Theme is a masterpiece. He was surprised it turned into a proper song, being made of sound effects. He thought about how it would feel cold underground, so a black background would make sense, the music amplified that cold feeling.
He works on 2D and 3D Mario games. Some of Mario’s simplicity was lost when going 3D. They at Nintendo are proud to be the originators of running horizontally and jumping quickly. A new generation of players got started with New Super Mario Bros. They wanted to do something new while continuing the same way as when they started.
They used to eat bento together in the office. They would work from early in the morning to late at night.
Other team members made Super Mario Galaxy’s music. It was good, but sometimes he felt it wasn’t Mario enough. Koji Kondo’s observatory music felt like Mario.
He does better when he is praised, but he doesn’t give much of it.
Mario will keep evolving with technology. Mario will be around for a long time as long as they focus on running and jumping while adding new things. They can expand and grow fun by taking on new challenges.

Summary: Nintendo works as though there are no limits to their efforts. There are still more markets that can be expanded into with the Nintendo Switch. If they make something new it can reach beyond the boundaries of entertainment. Satoshi Tajiri once joked that he’d need to sell two copies of each game to surpass Mario. That is one of the reasons the original Pokémon games came in two versions.
Hiroshi Yamauchi might have felt envy at the Nintendo Switch’s sales if he were still alive, but he’d also advise Nintendo to keep humble.
A major reason for venturing into movies is thinking about what kinds of entertainment can be an asset long term. They need people to make movies and videos, but just hiring more people is not the answer. Nintendo can collaborate on equal footing with partners. Nintendo Pictures is doing research to take on new challenges, like the Close to You Pikmin short.

Notes: Casa Brutus is a Japanese magazine about design and architecture. The December issue features an interview Mr. Miyamoto and seems to be completely about Mario. An English version was released in March 2026 and a few pages are readable in the linked Instagram post and video.
Summary: It’s astonishing how readable Mario is in a 16 x 16 pixel space. They tried various things, like moving the eyes, there was a lot of trial and error.
When designing hardware they also think about the games that will play on it, including Mario.
They have staff who oversee the Mario world. Irregularities can happen when rendering characters in 3D, but they’re careful to get the details right.
Mario feels like a person for the first time in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Both The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Super Nintendo World happened because of people outside of Nintendo. He focused on keeping people working together well. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is going to be set in the galaxy. His motto has been “keep working on it until it’s fun”.
The Goomba’s Japanese name references a chestnut, but it was inspired by a shiitake mushroom. The made Bloopers because squids float, the function comes first, then the form. Bowser’s sprite isn’t reused, so they could be bold. Koopa Troopa was first, because you could stomp and kick it. Then they needed an enemy you could just stomp, and they made the Goomba. Buzzle Beetle was made as a turtle that couldn’t be hurt by fire. Enemy designs never came from wanting to draw something.
He has an emotional connection to everything he’s made. After Super Mario World he felt that he’d mastered 2D Super Mario games. Super Mario 64 reminded him of his childhood. He loved puppet shows on NHK, such as Chirorin Village and the Walnut Tree and Hyokkori Hyotan Island. He wanted to become a puppet maker. He’d make monster dioramas and shoot them with his camera, which Super Mario 64 felt like. 2D Mario felt like drawing manga, while 3D felt like puppets.
He makes a distinction between directors, who focus on a single title, and producers, who work on several titles at once. With Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda it’s important that the player think and try things out. He wants them to be creative. There a number of people that he can trust with the Mario world. He plays the first 30 minutes of Mario games and examines the interface operation to make sure it feels Mario-like.
The Mario-like quality that he wants is recognizable at a glance and unique.
With help from people outside of Nintendo there is a Mario theme park and movie and he looks forward to seeing how things change in the future. With Super Mario Odyssey they’ve gotten everything they wanted out of the Switch. They’ve released new games with each console and he looks forward to seeing how they handle that, but he’s out. He hopes he is vital by Mario’s 50th anniversary.

Translator: Nintendo Patents Watch and perhaps an unknown person for Go Nintendo
Notes: Mr. Miyamoto was born in Sonobe, which later merged with several other towns to form Nantan. As a famous resident of the former Sonobe, Mr. Miyamoto was invited to give a speech to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the merge.
Note user 澪池ひびき is one source for what was said at this speech, though they don’t seem to use direct quotes. Kyoto Shimbun reported on it as well, but the article is behind a paywall.
It’s not clear if Go Nintendo is summarizing Nintendo Patents Watch or if they translated the same sources. There doesn’t seem to be any video footage of this speech.
Summary: His physical experiences while growing up in Sonobe have been useful for his career. He wants children to have both digital and real-world experiences.
Making something original can result in having a monopoly. Hiroshi Yamauchi would always be excited if he pitched a world first idea. When people ask why they’re making something with some skepticism, that’s when it has the potential to become huge.
He doesn’t ask the sales team what he should be making. They don’t have sales targets.
It’s hard to stand out purely through technological superiority. They need to make things only Nintendo could make.
He doesn’t understand why developers don’t try to make games that will appeal to a worldwide audience. Trying to follow Japanese trends won’t get you anywhere, people should make what they want to.
They don’t have sales targets at Nintendo.
Names that make people curious tend to stick. The first Kirby game was going to be called “Kirby: Child of the Stars”, but “Kirby of the Stars” is more mysterious. They knew The Legend of Zelda was going to be called “The Legend of something”. They decided to name it after Zelda Fitzgerald because she was unique. The word for time is “toki” and the word for ceramic is “tōki”, so Ocarina of Time is a bit of a pun on “ceramic ocarina”.

People were asking about Yoshi after the first trailer, and of course he’s part of the movie, he’s been with Mario for 30 years. Yoshi’s appearance in Super Mario World came from the desire to ride around on a dinosaur. Koji Kondo added a percussion track that would play when you were riding him. In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island he protects Mario and throws eggs.
They worked with Illumination to bring Yoshi to life. Let’s hear from Chris Meledandri.

Summary: He was born in Kyoto and it is the location of Nintendo’s headquarters. He’s overjoyed to see people come here to watch the movie from around the world.
He got ideas from Illumination about the characters they love, it was a joy to collaborate.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie flew by at 90 minutes and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is going to fly by even faster.

Format: Transcribed interview
People: Michael McWhertor, Chris Meledandri, Shigeru Miyamoto

Summary: After The Super Mario Bros. Movie he started talking with Chris Meledandri about the “next” movie, not a sequel. The Illumination side had the idea of a Super Mario Galaxy setting, which he thought could work.
He doesn’t see all the Nintendo characters coming together for a movie, but his rule is that Pikmin can appear in any Nintendo series. He realized how much variety there is with the Mario cast as he was making The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. A secret character plays a big role.
Birdo is somewhat like Yoshi. When Illumination pitched using some characters from the Land series and Super Mario Bros. 2 he thought it was great.
Mario has evolved alongside digital media, but there’s only so many people they can reach that way. They want to expand beyond Nintendo consoles. He wants people to ask what kind of world Nintendo will come up with next.
It’s difficult to get some emotional components of characters like Bowser across in video games, but they can do that with movies. He would love for people to go to the movie theater as a family.

Notes: This interview took place at the Nintendo Museum. The video features some brief footage of the museum, but none of the interviewees.
Summary: The whole team making The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a Nintendo family, it’s fun to get inspired by them.
When they were working on The Super Mario Bros. Movie they weren’t sure at first if it was going to mostly take place in Brooklyn or the Mushroom Kingdom. They based the next movie on Super Mario Galaxy because it made sense for a galaxy to exist above the Mushroom Kingdom.
He’s on a mission to include Pikmin in as many Nintendo products as he can.
Mario’s look has evolved over time. Going through the struggle of adapting Mario to movies and growing him as a character makes him and Mario happy.
With this second Mario movie things are more of a well-oiled machine.
He likes to think of having a Mario Troupe where they consider which character to cast.
He was surprised at how many talented characters there are in Nintendo and there’s a joy to having them appear in the movie.
Mickey Mouse is a character that has grown with animation and Mario is a character that has grown with digital technology. They realized films are another medium that can feature Mario, which gives more opportunities for people to engage with Nintendo.
Forbes: Shigeru Miyamoto And Chris Meledandri On ’The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’
Publication Date: March 31, 2026
Subject(s): The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Format: Transcribed interview
People: Ollie Barder, Chris Meledandri, Shigeru Miyamoto
Notes: This interview took place in Kyoto around March 24th.
Summary: Super Mario Bros., the 1993 film, was licensed, but the movies they are making with Illumination are made from the ground up.
When Mario went 3D there was more weight and meaning to the animation. They can provide data to Illumination, it’s a collaboration where they learn from each other.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie took place with Earth gravity, but by basing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on Super Mario Galaxy they can play with tricky gravity rules.
Chris Meledandri proposed having Star Fox in the movie. As the creator of Star Fox, and since the movie took place in space, he wanted to see that. He thought he would have to lobby the idea to Nintendo, but people were excited to see it.
When making Super Mario Galaxy he discussed what Peach and Rosalina’s relationship might be with Yoshiaki Koizumi, but never came to a conclusion. They had the opportunity again with this movie.
There were a lot of Mario fans working on the movie, who wanted to use a lot of Mario characters. It was unique because they often have to convince others to use Nintendo characters, there were many requests.

They were discussions about how a gravity experience that’s fun to play versus one that’s fun to watch.
There was a back and forth with the screenwriters to make sure the plot of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie didn’t contradict the games.
They had to drop some characters from the movie, there were too many.
You can rearrange pieces to restructure a game, but not so with a movie.
He provides information, context, and vision for the characters and world, but it’s Illumination that makes the movie.

Notes: Mr. Miyamoto claimed that 1 in 10 people in Taiwan had downloaded Pikmin Bloom, but this was not included in the official transcript, according to Nintendo Patents Watch.
Summary: He talked with Satoru Iwata for more than 15 years about Nintendo’s future. He was careful about smart devices and using their characters outside of games. He realized during development of the Wii that game systems have limited reach. People bought Nintendo systems to play a certain game. They started to expose their IP to more people over a decade ago.
Their IP initiatives have grown and expanded Nintendo around the world. Pikmin Bloom has spread on social media in South Korea and Taiwan. Adults and children play it and wear Pikmin hats. They’d like to expand these initiatives to bring more of their characters to the world, using movies, videos, and more.
