If you Google “Konami’s first game” seemingly every source will say 1977’s Block Yard is Konami’s first game. A Foreigners’ Guide to Eremeka Arcades documents electro-mechanical arcade games from Japan and shows several games being made by Konami before Block Yard. Caitlyn, who runs A Foreigners’ Guide, is very knowledgeable about this subject and draws from many sources, including many in Japanese, so I am comfortable calling Lucky Continental Konami’s first. It’s worth noting that Konami’s own website states that they “began manufacturing amusement machines for arcades” in 1973, so there may be more to discover. Konami had been around for five years at the time of Lucky Continental’s release, starting as a place to rent jukeboxes or get them repaired.

Many of Konami’s arcade games throughout the years are medal games. You may have been to an arcade where you turn your cash into tokens and use those tokens to play games like coin pushers or skeeball to earn tickets and then redeem the tickets for prizes. Medal games are like that, except you can’t redeem the medals you earn for anything other than more gameplay, due to gambling laws in Japan. Medal games are lumped into the arcade platform for this study.

Konami’s early history is entwined with another Japanese company that was making medal games, Leijac, to such a degree that the aforementioned source I am using here mostly credits them as Konami/Leijac. Leijac published several of these early Konami games but disappeared by 1981. This earliest title was seemingly published by Konami themselves, though there can be some ambiguity about this in contemporaneous sources. Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything about how this game plays.

There is a famous horse racing track in Ascot, England, which Ascot Race seems to be evoking. There will be many more horse racing arcade games.

Piccadilly Circus is another real place in England, though the “circus” in its name refers to an open space at a street intersection and not a place you go to see a squirrel, elephant, rabbit, monkey, and bear. Konami will go on to make over a dozen Piccadilly games.

Arguably Konami’s first sequel, New Piccadilly Circus, doesn’t have an animal theme but instead features someone air gliding and flying a plane. Flying circuses were a type of show that involved airplanes doing stunts.

Very little is known about Block Yard, we don’t even have a picture of it, but the common speculation online says it’s likely a clone of Breakout, which came out the previous year.

Kamikaze’s name was changed to Astro Invader when it was released outside of Japan. Some sources say this original Japanese version was released in 1980. As for the gameplay, it somewhat resembles Space Invaders, another arcade hit of the time. Players have to destroy columns of ships and avoid their explosions if they reach the bottom of the screen. You can see Tom Petty play it in the You Got Lucky music video.

Quite a few space themed games this year, probably all due to the popularity of Space Invaders.

Here we finally have Konami’s first game to leave Japan, with an obvious name change. Kamikaze must have seen a decent amount of success to be exported, yet it would only see a single console port and received no sequels. Konami’s website pins 1979 as the year they started to “export products to the United States”, but I haven’t seen any evidence that they released any games outside of Japan until this year.

Rock Paper Scissors, or janken, seems to hold a special place in Japanese culture and Konami would make another game with the same name two years later.

This is a very big year for Konami. Leijac is gone and several of 1981’s games are big successes and the beginnings of a series that would see many sequels. Frogger, Jungler, Scramble, Strategy X, Super Cobra, and Turtles will be ported to many more platforms and be re-released for decades. A few others were not so lucky, The End saw a single console port, while Tactician and Ultra Dome were never seen again.

Though Frogger was viewed with some skepticism for appealing to women and children, Sega/Gremlin licensed it after a successful playtest. The PC-6001 was an 8-bit home computer and a port of Frogger was Konami’s first non-arcade game. Though it became one of the most recognizable arcade games in the world, a legal dispute between Sega and Konami prevented Konami from making a sequel until 2001.

Turtles, sometimes called Turpin, is another arcade game featuring a green animal that spends a lot of time in and around the water. This one is a bit more like Pac-Man, where you play a turtle trying to save some turtle children from beetles. After touching a question mark block you either have to avoid a newly spawned beetle, or a child turtle joins you and you need to take it to a house icon.

Konami is releasing more games than ever and expanding into more 8-bit computers, relying on others for publishing.

Mobile Suit Gundam is Konami’s first game based on a licensed property as far as I can tell, two years after the end of the original anime.

Pooyan has a similar setup as Turtles: you play as an animal protecting your children from a predator, this time you’re a pig and the enemy are wolves. Konami held a contest in 2022, giving rights to indie developers to make games based on older series and Yanagi Bashi is apparently working on something called Re:Pooyan. I have no idea why it’s called Pooyan.

The first of Konami’s dedicated handheld games came out this year, including Astro Blaster, an adaptation of the Sega/Gremlin arcade game.

Tutankham is a bit of a maze game where you can shoot horizontally to clear enemies out of your path as you gather keys to unlock a door to complete each level.

In Loco-Motion you slide square blocks which contain train tracks into place to maneuver a train that moves continuously forward.

Konami’s first MSX games arrived in 1983. The MSX was not a specific computer, but rather a standardized architecture and was seen as one of the premier markets for games in Japan. Konami would become one of the most acclaimed developers for the MSX, and these games would be re-released and included in compilations for years to come. The MSX also had some success in Europe, though not every game made it there.

Athletic Land features a child maneuvering through an obstacle course.

Track & Field is the start of a series that has faded in relevance over time but it was Konami’s first sports game. It appears to simulate the Summer Olympics without using the name, with the 100 meter dash, long jump, javelin throw, hurdles, hammer throw, and high jump. The gameplay in many of these events involves mashing alternating buttons as fast as possible.

Roc’n Rope is an interesting vertical platformer where you can shoot a rope at a 45 degree angle to ascend. It seems to have a prehistoric setting, with dinosaur enemies. Tokuro Fujiwara worked on Roc’n Rope before going to Capcom and using a similar idea for Bionic Commando.

Gyruss is a space themed shooter where you move your ship around in a circle while the moving starfield gives the impression that you are traveling into the screen.

Antarctic Adventure is the first of a series about a penguin named Penta and is sort of a racing game where you must avoid obstacles. There’s quite a few games in this series that didn’t leave Japan and Penta was a bit of a mascot for Konami.

Sparkie is a maze game where you play as a bomb that fills the areas it has occupied with water. You must flood the entire level or destroy all of the enemies to get to the next level. It came out in Europe before Japan and has never been released for anything except MSX.

Konami wasted no time in making more Olympics games with Hyper Sports/Hyper Olympics releasing to arcades and MSX, and also a sequel on MSX in the same year. Featuring new sports and no button mashing. Konami Tennis and Super Basketball were even more sports games released this year.

Juno First is among many space shooters by Konami. Players can scroll the screen forward and backward and must destroy all UFOs to advance.

NABU was a kind of computer network that operated with coaxial TV cables. It was available in Canada and briefly in Japan, and these NABU games are the only Canadian exclusives on these lists. You had to buy a special computer from NABU to connect to their network, which also had a monthly fee. It was ahead of its time but didn’t last for long.

Pandora’s Palace was not the first game to feature a Moai head, but it was Konami’s first. According to moai.games there are 121 Konami games that include a Moai head somewhere.

LaserDisc was a media format that featured large optical disks, but was analog rather than digital. There were a few games made for the format, like Badlands on the MSX and in the arcade. A few models of MSX computers could read LaserDisks, and only 11 MSX LaserDisk games were made. This was before computers had CD drives, watching full motion video on your home computer would have been incredible at the time. You play as a cowboy trying to enact revenge for his murdered wife and child.

Konami would make a major name for itself on the Famicom and its first few releases come out this year.

Something less successful Konami would try this year was utilizing bubble memory for four arcade machines in Japan: Galactic Warriors, Gradius, Konami RF2 (later known as Konami GT), and TwinBee. This kind of memory was supposed to be more reliable than others, but it came with the downsides of needing several minutes to warm up, not actually being fast enough to run games, necessitating copying the bubble memory to conventional RAM, being sensitive to electromagnetic fields, and being more expensive.

TwinBee gets its start in the arcades in 1985. While many of Konami’s shoot ’em ups were set in space, TwinBee is an early example of the “cute ’em up” subgenre, with a cute, colorful, cartoony aesthetic. While controlling an anthropomorphized ship the player is able to shoot forward as well as drop bombs onto ground targets. Powerups in the form of bells can be shot at to change what the powerup does.

Gradius, also known as Nemesis, and also a complicated rabbit hole of sub-series and ever changing names, comes out in arcades for the first time. A horizontal shoot ’em up with an innovative weapon upgrade system, Gradius would have great success and spawn many more games.

The list of sports covered by a Konami game grows as baseball, boxing, football, and golf get released on MSX.

Green Beret’s name was changed to the cheeky Rush’n Attack for the North American release. You play as a U.S. soldier who battles through Soviet military bases to save prisoners of war.

King’s Valley is a belt scrolling puzzle platformer where you collect all of the treasure in a level before exiting through a door. There are a limited number of knives you can pick up to dispatch enemies and pickaxes you can use to destroy blocks.

Rock’n Rage has no relation to Roc’n Rope or Rush’n Attack despite the similarity of their names. Instead, band members John and Rick have to travel through time to save their singer Sheena. This game has never been available outside of this arcade release.

The Famicom Disk System comes out in Japan and one of Konami’s most beloved series gets its start there: Castlevania. Patterned after a horror film with lots of B-movie monsters, you control Simon Belmot on his quest to kill Dracula.

Mr. Goemon in the arcades and Ganbare Goemon! Karakuri Dōchū on the Famicom marks the start of the Ganbare Goemon series. The titular character is somewhat based on the real life Ishikawa Goemon, a bandit leader who stole from the rich and gave to the poor before being boiled alive. Gameplay among its many games varies, but it is overall lighthearted and cartoony.

The Goonies was released the year prior for MSX and this year for the Famicom. The computer versions differ a bit, being more exploratory and having bigger levels, but both are about rescuing the other Goonies.

Salamander, or Life Force as it was known in North America is a sort of sub series to Gradius. This is a space shooter, though it differentiates itself with levels that can scroll horizontally or vertically and a two player co-op feature. The Japanese and European Salamander features a level with some biological theming, but the North American Life Force recontextualizes the entire game as taking place inside a giant alien.

The Konami code Source

Gradius for NES marks the debut of the Konami code. Kazuhisa Hashimoto included it while porting the game from the arcade to make testing easier, but forgot to remove it. It gained more notoriety from its usage in Contra, and has gone on to be included in dozens of Konami games and become emblematic of video games as a whole.

Getsu Fūma Den is another revenge story, this time against demons. You can collect money from defeated foes to upgrade your gear and level up, making this an action RPG. This game has been re-released several times but has still never left Japan. There is a second game in the series quite a long time from now.

The original Contra comes to arcades this year, a big hit for Konami and another series that would see many entries. A run and gun game with horizontal, vertical, and whatever you call shooting “into” the screen is called levels. The high level of difficulty of the NES version makes its use of the Konami Code perhaps the most well known.

Penguin Adventure serves as the first video game Hideo Kojima worked on, though he says he only joined in on development during the last month and pitched a few ideas.

But it wasn’t long before Hideo Kojima was put in charge of a game called Metal Gear. An early example of a stealth game, Metal Gear is more about avoiding enemies than blasting every enemy on screen. There are some sophisticated for the time mechanics, with different levels of alert and several gadgets to make good use of.

Haunted Castle is an arcade entry in the Castlevania series known for being very difficult and not very fun.

The Treasure of Uşas is a platform game where you choose one of two characters to play as, which each have different stats. There are also four emotions you can have which change your abilities. These were translated many different ways but the European manual calls them happy, anger, sad, and good humour.

1988 saw the creation of Ultra Games, a shell company made by Konami to get around Nintendo’s limit on the number of games a publisher could release per year, the first game being Metal Gear. The question I have, and have seen no discussion of: did Nintendo know Ultra was Konami or not? It’s difficult to believe they wouldn’t have realized, but it also seems odd to give a publisher an exception just because they were using a different name.

The original Blades of Steel arcade game was only released in North America in 1987, but home console releases started here in 1988. Blades of Steel would get a few sequels but hockey is not a sport Konami would ultimately do much with.

Skate or Die was one of Konami’s rare port jobs of a game they didn’t make, so the NES version counts for this list.

The first four of many Konami compilations released this year. Konami Game Collection 1, 2, 3, and 4 are MSX compilations of five MSX games. The second and fourth are sports games, while the third is all shoot ’em ups.

Konami Wai Wai World Source

Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa, or as it’s more widely thought of, “that Famicom Disk System platformer with the baby”, releases this year and won’t see a release outside of Japan until 2008 on the Wii.

Snatcher is another Hideo Kojima game, a science fiction adventure game with a cyberpunk theme.

The Adventures of Bayou Billy is a beat ’em up where you can take weapons from enemies, a rail shooter, and a racing game in one. There were quite a few changes for the NES version, including making it punishingly difficult.

The Parodius series gets its start here and the first game goes by quite a few different names: Parodius, Parodius: The Octopus Saves the Earth, Parodius Da!, and Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy. As the name implies this horizontal shooter is a bit of a silly parody of the Gradius series, though several other Konami games are also lampooned.

That’s not all for self-referential Konami games in 1988, though. Konami Wai Wai World features Konami Man and Konami Lady rescuing characters from other Konami games, which then allows you to play as them. Included playable characters are Goemon (Ganbare Goemon), Simon Belmot (Castlevania), Getsu Fūma (Getsu Fūma Den), Mikey (The Goonies), Moai Alexandria (not an actual character before this, but representing Gradius), King Kong (King Kong 2: Ikari no Megaton Punch), Vic Viper (Gradius), and TwinBee (TwinBee). Konami Man didn’t actually get his start in this game, as he appeared as a little easter egg in a handful of games before this.

Quarth is an odd puzzle/shooter game where you shoot blocks at shapes to make them into rectangles, which then makes them disappear.

The Konami QTa Adaptor was a device you could plug into a Famicom that had its own cartridge slot to play its own special games. Six of its seven games were released this year and are educational games that teach math.

Konami releases the four player beat ’em up Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game as well as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a platformer where you can switch between playing as each turtle. These both have quite a few different and confusing names, so I may not be using the one you are most familiar with.

Bull’s Eye Barbecue Sauce was a dedicated handheld made to promote Bull’s Eye Barbecue Sauce, which still exists to this day.

Palcom was established as Europe’s version of Ultra Games in 1990.

The seventh and final Konami GTa Adaptor game was made to train employees of the petroleum company Idemitsu.

Moai-kun is a single screen puzzle platformer where you control a Moai head who must save other Moai heads and then reach the exit by destroying blocks, moving objects around, and avoiding hazards.

Kokekko!! is an arcade game where upon successfully rescuing enough chicks a gachapon capsule is rewarded. This game was noteworthy enough for it to be referenced in several other Konami games.

In the previous year Konami made a dedicated Skate or Die handheld game and in 1990 they released a Skate or Die game for the Game Boy, which seems to be a platformer.

Kid Dracula is part of the Castlevania series, but this time you’re playing as a vampire.

Determined to leave no sport unrepresented, RollerGames is a rare roller derby game, based on the TV show of the same name and never coming to Japan. This NES version is a platformer where you must rescue commissioner Bill Griffiths.

Snake’s Revenge was not made by Hideo Kojima and is not considered canon, but he doesn’t seem to hate it. It was never released in Japan.

Punk Shot is a two on two basketball game mixed with a beat ’em up.

Mario Roulette is a medal game that resembles one of the bonus rooms in Super Mario World, where the player tries to form a line of symbols. Piccadilly Circus: Super Mario Bros. 3 and Piccadilly Circus: Super Mario World also released this year.

Perhaps trying to recapture the magic of adapting an American cartoon into a four player simultaneous beat ’em up arcade game, The Simpsons hits arcades. There are also more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games, a Tiny Toons game, a The Lone Ranger game, and a Star Trek game this year.

Cave Noire is a roguelike on the Game Boy which never left Japan, which is a shame because there wasn’t much else like it for the Game Boy. You play as an adventurer who must delve into several randomly generated dungeons to kill monsters, rescue fairies, collect treasure, and get stronger.

Konami developed several games for the ill-fated X68000, including Namachūkei 68, a baseball game perhaps most noteworthy for being completely standalone and predating Konami’s huge baseball series.

Orius, also known as Xexex is another horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up set in space.

Super Castlevania IV is a beloved iteration of the vampire slaying series and made some interesting use of Mode 7, such as a room that spun around you as you hung by your whip.

The Sega Genesis was released in Japan in 1988, yet it wasn’t until 1992 that Konami released their first game for a Sega system. A port of the arcade game Sunset Riders and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist both released in December of this year, and the exact dates don’t seem to be known so I can’t tell you which one was first.

Asterix is a beat ’em up based on the French comic and despite only featuring English and French text, never left Japan.

A Bucky O’Hare dedicated handheld game came out the previous year, but 1992 has an NES and arcade version. Based on an American cartoon, the NES version has you visiting several planets to rescue your crewmates, who you can then switch to on the fly, similar to Konami Wai Wai World. The arcade game is a beat ’em up.

Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa is a beat ’em up with ranged weapons and some platforming based on an American cartoon.

G.I. Joe is a shooter where you are often moving forward into the screen, based on an American cartoon.

X-Men is a beat ’em up based on the pilot of an American cartoon.

The Picno was a video game system made by Konami and sold only in Japan. Somewhat resembling a Wii U GamePad, it came with a stylus to draw on the central touch screen, which also has a few buttons. All of its games were educational.

God Medicine: Fantasy Sekai no Tanjou is a Game Boy RPG. Three children who love RPGs go into an RPG world to save both it and the real world.

Lethal Enforcers gets its first home port on the Sega Genesis. To replicate the arcade experience the Konami Justifier light gun was included with the game. There would be versions of the Justifier sold for the SNES and PlayStation as well, and some non-Konami games even supported it.

Zen: Intergalactic Ninja is based on a comic about an alien environmentalist and got both an NES and Game Boy game. The NES version has a lot of variety, featuring isometric platforming, side scrolling platforming, a minecart level, climbing and falling levels, and some interesting boss fights.

Two new Batman games in 1993, Batman: The Animated Series for Game Boy is a platformer based on the 1992 animated series, while Batman Returns for the SNES is a beat ’em up based on the 1992 movie.

Konami didn’t release a whole lot of games for the Genesis but Rocket Knight Adventures was a new series not based on a license that started here. The gameplay is quite kinetic thanks to Sparkster’s rocket pack that allows him to zip around levels.

Konami only released three games for the PC-98, a shogi game, a port of Quarth, and Policenauts. Like Snatcher, Policenauts was written and directed by Hideo Kojima, and is a science fiction adventure/visual novel game. Unlike Snatcher, Policenauts would never officially leave Japan.

Some of the very last officially licensed NES games were released to the European market by Konami here in 1994: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters and Tiny Toon Adventures 2: Trouble in Wackyland.

Biker Mice From Mars is based on an American cartoon and is an isometric racer with purchasable upgrades. The European version for some reason was sponsored by Snickers and features a lot of product placement.

Gokujou Parodius Da! Deluxe Pack, or Parodius as it was confusingly named in Europe, is a Japanese PlayStation launch title featuring two Parodius games.

Tokimeki Memorial is a dating sim game that would become very influential to the genre, including its use of stats and a focus on scheduling. Koji Igarashi is more known for his work on Castlevania, but before he ever worked on the series he was a programmer and writer for Tokimeki Memorial, enlisting the help of his future wife. Not a single game from the series has left Japan.

One of Konami’s biggest series starts on the Super Famicom. A series that often has multiple releases a year, has multiple spinoffs, and has rarely been released outside of Japan. That’s right, Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu, currently running under the name MLB Power Pros, starts here. These games feature super deformed characters playing baseball, but there is also a mode with a life simulation aspect off the field where the player has to make a series of choices that can help or hinder their player. The Super Famicom game was ported to the PlayStation as Jikkyō Powerful Pro Yakyū ’95.

Taisen Puzzle-dama, or Crazy Cross in Europe, was the start of a long-running puzzle game series with a large cast of characters that rarely left Japan. It plays like Puyo Puyo, with players making matches of three balls in a row and trying to make combos to disrupt their opponent.

Suikoden is somewhat based on the novel Water Margin and is the start of the RPG series Konami is best known for. This is a turn based RPG about the son of a general finding himself leading a group trying to overthrow the corrupt empire. The series is most well known for allowing you to recruit 108 Stars of Destiny and building up a base of operations.

Eisei Meijin for Windows 95, a shogi game and part of a series, is a rare PC release for this era. The box it came in is shaped like a shogi piece.

Two distinct NBA games released this year, NBA In The Zone on the PlayStation and NBA Give ‘n Go on the Super Nintendo.

Crypt Killer is a light gun arcade game playable with up to three players and a mix of 2D and 3D graphics. There are four different endings available.

Castlevania: Dracula X is a remake of Rondo of Blood, a game that was only released for the upgraded version of the CD ROM add-on for the Turbografx. Several changes were made, like the removal of other playable characters and some levels.

Goal Storm, a soccer game, was inexplicably released in North America first. The European and Japanese name was World Soccer Winning Eleven, which would eventually be changed to Pro Evolution Soccer, and eFootball PES after that. PES has sold over 100 million copies since its inception, but has still lagged behind its biggest competitor, FIFA in sales.

Wave Shark is a jet ski racing game.

Vandal Hearts is a strategy RPG with seven classes (archer, armor, cleric, hawknight, mage, monk, and swordsman) which are strong or weak against other classes.

The Bishi Bashi series of games are short minigame collections primarily played with other people. The short games and silly attitude are quite similar to WarioWare.

International Track & Field is another Olympic sports game, now in 3D, but still with a lot of button mashing.

Konami hasn’t made many fighting games, but Lightning Legend: Daigo no Daibouken is their first in 3D. There are eight characters you can select from the start, with a few more unlockable.

Let’s Talk About Slot Machines

There’s no perfect place to put this, but 1996 is the year Konami Australia was founded. It, alongside Konami Gaming of Nevada, are subsidiaries that make a lot of slot machines. I wanted to include all Konami games in this project, so that includes the slot machines. The thing is, very few people are interested in recording slot machine history. In some lists of games it’s not clear which are medal games, arcade games, or pachinko machines. There is almost never information about where they are released.

I am relying on the Undumped Wiki for a lot of this slot machine information, who seems to mostly get their information from catalogs aimed at casinos looking to buy slot machines. However, there’s often limited information, especially the year of release. I checked Konami Gaming’s YouTube channel and I checked gambling blogs, and I got probable release years for some machines that are up to maybe 10 years old. But there’s still 552 slot machines that I don’t have years for. I’m assuming these were all released in North America and many in Australia, based on Japanese gambling laws, the way they are named, and knowing which subsidiaries make slot machines.

Here’s the list of 552 slot machines about which I only have a name:

Konami GB Collection Vol. 1 and 2 release this year for the Game Boy, followed by volumes 3 and 4 next year only in Japan. Each of these compilations contains four Game Boy games with no theming.

Azure Dreams is a roguelike RPG. Protagonist Koh can develop his team of familiars in the Monster Tower and use the riches he acquires to improve his town and romance seven different love interests.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night expands on Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest’s RPG elements with levels, equipment, learnable spells, and shops. There is also more emphasis on non-linear exploration with relics enabling main character Alucard to access new areas via new abilities rather than a key and lock system, making it one of the foundational games in the Metroidvania genre.

Broken Helix was marketed as a “4D” game because there is an emphasis on time and important events can unfold offscreen. There are four different paths you can choose to complete the game. Bruce Campbell voices the protagonist.

Beatmania is a music rhythm game where a song plays and you have to press the buttons or spin the turntable as prompted, in time with the music. Made by Konami’s Games & Music Division, Beatmania would prove popular enough for dozens of arcade and console releases and for the division to rename itself Bemani. Bemani will go on to make many more music series, mostly only as arcade games, and mostly only available in Japan and east Asia

The series Bemani is perhaps most known for, Dance Dance Revolution, launched in Japanese arcades in 1998. Another music rhythm game, DDR tasks players with stepping on four arrow buttons pointing up, left, right, and down in time with the music and on screen prompts.

Rakugakids, meaning something like “doodle kids” is one of the very few 2D fighters on the N64, featuring a cast that looks like they were drawn with crayon.

Konami 80’s AC Special is a compilation of 10 Konami arcade games from the 80s: Circus Charlie, Gyruss, Pooyan, Road Fighter, Roc’n Rope, Scramble, Shao-lin’s Road/Kick, Super Cobra, Time Pilot, and Yie Ar Kung-Fu. It was released on the PlayStation and there was also an arcade machine. Arcade machines that are a compilation of other games are pretty rare and notable, but unfortunately I couldn’t find any pictures of a cabinet.

Metal Gear Solid Source

Pop’n Music is a new and prolific music rhythm series from Bemani. Featuring a row of four buttons above a row of five buttons it’s not meant to represent an instrument like many Bemani games.

Beatmania Pocket is the first in the Bemani Pocket line of handheld game adaptations of various Bemani games.

Konami locked down the rights to make Yu-Gi-Oh games and the first two came out in 1998: Yu-Gi-Oh! Monster Capsule: Breed & Battle for PlayStation and Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters for Game Boy. On average more than two Yu-Gi-Oh games have come out every year since then. In 1999 Konami launched the trading card game, which is also still going strong.

Suikoden is released for Windows 95 in Japan, one of several releases of the growing cult classic that wouldn’t leave Japan.

Konami released one last Super Famicom game: Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyuu: Basic Han ’98.

MMetal Gear Solid revives the Metal Gear series with a game that rocked the video game world. Featuring cinematic storytelling, dealing with serious topics like war and the proliferation of nuclear weapons, while also not being afraid to be goofy and to break the fourth wall, there just wasn’t anything like Metal Gear Solid.

Several new Bemani rhythm series this year, and new versions of the older ones. GuitarFreaks features a small guitar with three buttons on the neck, a pick lever, and a turnable knob. DrumMania features five drum heads and a floor pedal. These games are often paried together and known as Gitadora. Pop’n Stage had two releases and they were both released in 1999. The two games are like a cross between Pop’n Music and Dance Dance Revolution, but a bit more forgiving.

Beatmania IIDX is considered a separate series from Beatmania, which still got regular releases alongside its successor for several years. The difference is that IIDX has seven buttons instead of five, five effectors, and a second mirrored set of buttons and turntable for a second player.

BeatMania for WonderSwan was Konami’s only WonderSwan game.

Two “Silent” series get their start this year. Silent Scope has a sniper rifle mounted to the arcade machine which you must use to save the president and his family from terrorists.

Silent Hill is an atmospheric survival horror game where the player controls Harry Mason who is looking for his daughter in the mytserious town of Silent Hill.

Arguably a JRPG, Hybrid Heaven is a one of a kind game. While you explore and interact with levels like a traditional 3D action game, when you enter a battle you’re put into a small arena and select your attack or defense from a list and then watch the result play out. You learn new attacks by having them performed on you by enemies. These attacks can be leveled up, as well as various body parts.

Airforce Delta, or Deadly Skies in Europe is the first in a fairly short series of flight combat games.

Castlevania’s first 3D game comes to the N64, and it’s yet another entry just called “Castlevania”. Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness comes out later in this same year as an expanded version.

Survival Kids tasks players with keeping a child alive on a deserted island while managing their thirst, hunger, and fatigue.

There were four Bemani arcade games released exclusively in South Korea and there were a slew of console ports of various Bemani games.

DanceManiax is a dancing game that uses infrared sensors to determine your movements.

Keyboardmania features a 24 key keyboard, making it less of a simulation than other Bemani games.

ParaParaParadise is a dancing game made to capitalize on the recurring Para Para dancing fad in Japan.

Fighting Mania: Fist of the North Star sounds like it could be a Bemani game, but it is not about music. Instead players would put on the included gloves and punch targets after they have swung out and lit up.

Gun Mania apparently allows the player to shoot real BBs. There doesn’t seem to be any footage of it being played.

I have a system called “Mobile Phone”. This encompasses all games played on non-smartphone phones. Japan had many competing online services that sold games. It includes EZ Web, Yahoo! Keitai, and i-mode as well as North American and European services and standards.

Konami’s first mobile game, Konami Characore World releases this year. Players could play minigames to earn coins and then spend those coins on wallpapers and ringtones for their phone. I don’t know exactly when it launched, but Konami Net was a service with a monthly fee that allowed users to buy and access their mobile phone games. It was shut down in 2016.

Konami GB Collection: Vol.1, 2, 3, and 4 are the same collections of Game Boy games, except this time released on the Game Boy Color, and only in Europe instead of only in Japan.

The Simpsons Bowling was an arcade game that seems to have only been released in North America.

Ephemeral Fantasia is a music themed JRPG that takes place during five looping days. The guitar playing sections are compatible with the GuitarFreaks controllers for the PlayStation 2.

AirForce Delta Storm is Konami’s first game for an Xbox system, and was a launch title.

Mobile Adapter GB Source

Tsurugi: The Sword is an arcade game played by swinging a sword connected to the machine. I couldn’t find any footage of this in action.

Etiquette Teddy was marketed to young women. It is a Tamagotchi-like handheld device with a sensor that you could blow into to check your breath. If your breath smells bad the bear character you are caring for will be in a bad mood.

Konami starts bringing older arcade titles to mobile phones, such as Gradius.

Adventure of Tokyo Disney SEA has both a Game Boy Advance and PlayStation 2 version. You explore Tokyo DisneySea and obtain rock, paper, scissors cards to battle with.

Mambo a Go Go is a Bemani game with only one entry. There are three drums with three sections you can strike.

Zone of the Enders was a short lived mech combat series. You play as Leo Stenbuck, a young man who finds himself piloting an Orbital Frame.

Shadow of Destiny, or Shadow of Memories in Europe is an adventure game where you move through time to alter how events play out, ultimately giving you one of several endings depending on your decisions. The clock is always ticking so you have to make good use of your time.

Play Novel: Silent Hill is a visual novel launch title for the Game Boy Advance. Stills from the original game’s CG cutscenes are used rather than new art. There were additional scenarios that could be downloaded via Mobile Adapter GB, but these have been lost.

Mobile21 was established as a joint venture between Nintendo and Konami in 1999 to make games for Nintendo’s handheld systems. Their first games started coming out in 2001. Many of these games used the Mobile Adapter GB to connect Game Boys to phones to download new content. The service was used by a few games not made by Mobile21, including Pokémon Crystal, but shut down in 2002.
